It can be challenging to stay on track with your heath goals during the holidays. So here are a few simple ways to eat healthily and still enjoy the holiday flavors.

1. Prioritize quality protein. Protein is satiating and also has a higher thermic effect, meaning it burns more calories to digest it (it’s a win-win!)

2. Snack smart: have high protein snacks around like hard boiled eggs or grass fed beef jerky to help curb your hunger and avoid snacking on sugary sweets.

3. Hydrate well. We often times mistake being thirsty for being hungry. Drink adequate water and throw in some electrolytes to stay hydrated.

4. Be active. Staying active is key to maintaining blood sugar levels especially during times when we know we will be indulging more than usual.
- For some easy “exercise snacks” check out my previous post.

With all that being said, also be sure to indulge in laughter, sleep, family time and rest along with ALL the other holiday flavors!

Do you know how much of an impact your food actually makes?

We already discussed the benefits of eating organic local produce in a previous post (if you haven’t seen it, check it out). Another major impact on your health and especially also on our planet is how our meat is being produced.

Conventional farming/ranching also known as Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) is currently the primary way our meat is raised. These animals live in environments that are toxic. They are squeezed into small spaces with no room to move, get fed genetically modified grains, and even get fed candy to help fatten them up. They are pumped full of hormones and antibiotics to deal with infections that are a result of their poor living environments. This way of producing meat is harmful to our health and the health of the planet.

Regenerative farming/ranching provides the animals their natural habitat and state of living. By allowing these animals to roam and move freely they help to improve the soil which in turn helps to retain more water (less watering and less flooding) and also helps to sequester carbon to reduce climate change.

These animals are high in vitamins and fatty acids and support our health and the health of Mother Nature.

Starting to move from eating conventional meat to organic grass fed is a great start. Unfortunately the standards for grass fed are also no longer what they used to be, so the next step is to move to regeneratively raised meat. Some of our favorite Ranches to get our meat from are , and

Take charge of your heath and become a great Stewart of Mother Nature by supporting a more regenerative way of living. Our future selves and future generations will thank you!

We often get the question “is organic really better for you”? The simple answer is YES! Conventional produce is sprayed heavily with fertilizers, fungicides, pesticides and herbicides (the most well known being glyphosate, the active ingredient in roundup - more on that to come). These chemicals are detrimental to our health and our environment. These foods are nutritionally depleted and can cause leaky gut issues which sets us up for a long list of other health problems.

These toxins also devastate our soil and environment and the rest of mother natures ecosystem.

This is why we recommend people go as organic as they can. One of the best places to shop for organic produce is your local farmers markets! You will be amazed at how much different the food tastes when it is local and fresh, Vs. Picked 2 mo the ago, ripened on co Rainer ships and sprayed with toxins.

A good resource to see which foods are the heaviest sprayed and which are ok to eat if not organic is the “clean 15 and dirty dozen” list put out by the environmental working group. (You can find that list on their website).
Starting small and with the foods you consume frequently can help to make the transition easier as well.

The best investment we can make is in our own heath. We will either pay at the Farm or the Pharmacy.

Eating fermented foods was for many years common, nearly daily practice as it allowed foods to be stored for longer. This process also creates a habitats for beneficial bacteria to grow.

The modern diet unfortunately is quite devoid of fermented foods (unless it is coming from highly processed, sugar laden Yogurts).

Our gut bacteria are an essential part of life so we need to make sure we keep our gut happy with foods that help our Bactria flourish.

Some great fermented foods include sauerkraut, miso, kimchi, tempeh and even pickled vegetables (these can be found in the refrigerated section and will say “live cultures”).

Fermented foods have also been shown to be more beneficial in increasing the bacterial diversity in the gut over eating more fiber rich foods.

Happy gut, happy you!
