**Aftershock** The documentary that we have been waiting for is finally premiering today, July 19th!

If you have been following us, you will understand why this documentary is so important to us. The families in this documentary are the reason why Paradigm Doulas exists.

There are many pregnant women and birthing folks who are dying during or after childbirth from preventable causes. I encourage you to watch this documentary to see how families are being impacted daily.

April is Cesarean Awareness Month
As a mother whose had two cesarean births, I often reflect on the stories and emotions that my scars carry. Both beautiful…yet traumatic.

When looking in the mirror, I am reminded everyday of the importance of having a doula and a provider who values patient-centered care.

For over 10 years, I have seen providers who cared more about hospital policies than the parent’s ability to labor naturally. I have seen providers push for cesareans and repeat cesareans, not for the safety of the parent or baby, but for their own convenience and an opportunity to earn more money.

While I understand that there are true emergency situations that require a life-saving cesarean delivery, I also understand that there are many patients who are not given proper education to make informed decisions and to know that they are in control of their bodies.

In 2020, 31.8% of births in the U.S. were from cesarean deliveries. Per the World Health Organization(WHO), the ideal rate for cesarean births should be between 10-15%.

Through studies, researchers found that there was a huge variation between hospitals. Some hospitals had low cesarean rates, while others had almost 60% cesarean rates with no improved outcome for the parent and baby.

So what does this huge variation between hospitals mean? It means that there is a problem with QUALITY of care and preventative measures.

According to ACOG and The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, increasing access to continuous labor support can reduce the need for cesarean births.
