Many years ago I was waiting for a train in London. Glancing at a book rack in Waterloo station, my eyes landed on a brownish paperback with an unattractive cover and rather boring title: Bunkhouse Logic. For some reason I picked it up and thumbed through the book. Lucky for me, I bought it.

That ugly little paperback by Ben Stein holds one of the best coaching points I’ve ever read for achieving success. It actually comes from another book, one written by the great novelist Joan Dideon: “You can’t win if you’re not at the table.”

If you wish to achieve extreme success, there’s a devious 3-headed monster you must fight. And you need to know this: It fights dirty.

The monster attacks you from the inside via your thoughts, using uncertainty, doubt, and failure to deceive you. It’s cruel but sly, cleverly insisting that it’s there to protect you. The monster points to the risks, to how you could get hurt and what you might lose. It warns you to be careful, pushing you to ditch or at least delay your big ideas. It employs your imagination, emotions, and faulty logic to derail the pursuit of your finest ambitions.

I’m a big believer in setting goals. Psychological research proves that being well-aimed in your behavior produces better results. Question is, what size of goals should you target?

Small goals are safe. They're comfortable. They let you sleep well at night because you know you can probably pull them off without much of a sweat.

But here's the thing about small goals—they're like cold gravy on biscuits. Sure, they'll fill you up, but they won't fire you up. They’re not particularly satisfying, and certainly not delicious.
