🧠🍷On an SSRI and drinking alcohol? This isn’t a scare post, it’s a brain chemistry post
Alcohol and SSRIs don’t just “coexist.”
They interact — and for many students, that combo hits harder than expected.
Alcohol is a depressant.
SSRIs affect how your brain processes mood, judgment, and reaction time.
Put them together and you may notice:
• stronger intoxication
• worse coordination & judgment
• increased anxiety or low mood
• higher seizure risk (especially with binge drinking or poor sleep)
One big myth I see all the time:
🚫 “I’ll just skip my SSRI if I plan to drink.”
SSRIs stay in your system longer than a day — skipping doesn’t reduce risk and can actually worsen symptoms.
For some students, 1–2 drinks occasionally may not dramatically increase risk — but that depends on the specific medication, dose, and your health history.
This is a conversation to have with your own prescriber or pharmacist, not social media direct medical advice!
