A true knot of the umbilical cord is uncommon, occurring in about 0.3% to 1.2% of pregnancies in many studies, with some reviews citing a broader range up to about 2%. Put simply, that is roughly 1 in 300 to 1 in 100 pregnancies, with about 1 in 100 often used as an easy rule-of-thumb. Most are only found at delivery, and many do not cause harm.
