Dr. James McCune Smith (1813–1865) was the first African American to earn a medical degree and practice medicine in the United States.

During a time when African Americans were not permitted to attend medical school in America, Dr. Smith studied and earned his M.D. at the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 1837.

Dr. Smith was also a well-known abolitionist of the 19th century, cofounding the National Council of Colored People alongside Frederick Douglass in 1853.

In addition to his many accomplishments, he was also the first African American to own and operate a pharmacy in America.
