Laura Tigert served in the military from 1964 – 1966 and is an Army Vietnam Veteran. While on active-duty Laura was an electronic technician. “When I got out of the Army in 1966 there weren’t many jobs for women with an electronic background, so I decided to work for the Department of Defense as a civilian. I went overseas and that was my home for 28 years.”

Laura was not new to the military explaining that she was 7th generation military. My parents had 4 boys and one girl. “All my brothers went into the Navy, I went into the Army because at that time a woman could only be a nurse, and I didn’t have the bedside manners to be a nurse,” she laughs.

Laura has been using the NTXVAHCS since 1975.

Caleb Wainscott begin serving his country in 2021on active duty in the Army. He was a Combat Medic for 4 years and continues to serve as a member of the Army Reserve. Caleb has been at the Denton CBOC for 5 months as a Medical Assistant and says, “This is where I belong.”

“I love serving our Veterans - this is a unique situation for me. I’m still get to wear my uniform, I’m a Veteran, and I get to help other Veterans. I couldn’t ask for anything more!” Caleb shares.

“I’m also pretty young and I hope that I can change some of the negative perception of the VA in some Veterans’ minds, especially the younger generation of men and women. This place is great, and I hope more Veterans give the VA a chance.”

At the Dallas VA Medical Center, Alissa Nguyen has been a dedicated dentist since 2019. Her work goes beyond routine procedures—it’s about restoring confidence and dignity to our Veterans.

“The most rewarding part of my job is putting a smile on my patients’ faces,” Nguyen says. “Most of our patients are homeless and haven’t received dental care in years. Being able to give them back their smiles is an honor.”
While Nguyen doesn’t have family members who served in the military, she’s open to the idea for her children. “If my kids grow up and want to serve, I’d fully support it,” she adds.

Nguyen has a simple but heartfelt message for the Veterans she serves: “Thank you for your service and the sacrifices you’ve made for our country.”

Nguyen’s work at the Dallas VA is a testament to the impact of compassionate care. Through her dedication, she helps rebuild the smiles and confidence of those who have served.

Each year during the month of March, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) celebrate National Nutrition Month® by promoting the importance of making informed food choices while developing both sound eating and physical activity habits.

This year, the 2026 National Nutrition Month® theme is "Discover the Power of Nutrition.”

Incorporating nutrient-rich foods into your diet can help improve overall health, boost immunity, and help reduce risk of chronic diseases. Pick one of these strategies to try over the next week to help you discover the power of nutrition:

Add Another Color to Your Plate: Challenge yourself to include at least one new colorful fruit or vegetable each day. More colors = more nutrients!

Action Tip: Try purple cabbage, golden beets, or orange bell peppers this week.

Start your day with energy and focus by choosing a breakfast that includes protein:

Action Tip: Think eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu scramble, or nut butter on whole grain toast.

Swap One Sugary Drink for Water or Herbal Tea: Hydration is key to digestion, energy, and overall health. Cutting back on added sugars is a bonus!

Action Tip: Infuse water with citrus, berries, or cucumber for flavor without the sugar.

Try a New Whole Grain: Whole grains are packed with fiber, B vitamins, and minerals. Explore beyond brown rice!

Action Tip: Sample quinoa, farro, bulgur, or barley in a salad or side dish.

Practice Mindful Eating Once a Day: Slow down and savor your food. Notice flavors, textures, and how your body feels.

Action Tip: Put away screens during one meal a day and focus on each bite.

Want a delicious way to eat more whole grains? Try out this National Nutrition Month® recipe of the week from our Healthy Teaching Kitchen : Berry Vanilla Overnight Oats.
