Two studies reported in JAMA Cardiology suggest long-term damage to the heart is possible following COVID-19, even among patients who were not hospitalized. A analysis of cardiac MRIs found higher rates of inflammation and evidence of structural change in 100 COVID-19 survivors, and high levels of the novel coronavirus were found in the hearts of 24 out of 39 people who died early in the pandemic. PSA: Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, urged Americans, businesses and hospitals to prepare for potential community spread of the emerging coronavirus, noting "disruption to everyday life might be severe." CDC Principal Deputy Director Anne Schuchat and HHS Secretary Alex Azar said the immediate risk in the US remains low, but rising cases in other countries suggest the US will see an increase beyond the current 57 documented cases. Seventy-eight percent of 153 transgender youths ages 12 to 26 at a local clinic reported having disclosed their gender identity to health care professionals outside of the clinic, but 47% deliberately avoided disclosure, even when it may be important to their health, with feelings of discomfort and unawareness on how to raise the topic being the most common reasons for disclosure hesitancy, researchers reported in the Journal of Adolescent Health. The findings also showed that only 25% preferred to initiate gender identity discussions with their providers.

PSA: Scientists in China analyzed data on 72,314 suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19 and found that the coronavirus causing the outbreak, which has killed around 2,100 people and infected roughly 75,000, is more contagious than the viruses that cause SARS and MERS. The study, published in the Chinese Journal of Epidemiology, found COVID-19 has a lower fatality rate but its greater spread has resulted in more deaths than SARS or MERS.

A Vital Signs report in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report says progress on reducing the number of new HIV infections has leveled off, and the authors say more work is needed to achieve the government's goal of a 90% reduction in new diagnoses by 2030. The report notes that in 2017, about 14% of people who were infected did not know it, and among those who did have a diagnosis, more than one-third had not achieved viral suppression, well short of goals.

A study in the Journal of the American College of Radiology found that the implementation of a same-day breast biopsy program led to reductions in disparities in the time to biopsy from recommendation to procedure. "Our findings not only support established racial/ethnic disparities in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment but also support that access-enhancing interventions are effective," researchers wrote.
