Pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of illness and hospitalization worldwide, yet with early detection and proper treatment, most cases are preventable and treatable.

Common symptoms include:
- Shortness of breath
- Fever or chills
- Fatigue and weakness
- Chest pain or cough

This World Pneumonia Day, take time to protect your health by staying up to date on your vaccines, practicing good hand hygiene, avoiding smoking and exposure to pollutants and seeking medical care as soon as possible if symptoms occur.

Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals specialize in treating complex respiratory conditions, particularly in ventilator weaning. Pulmonologists and respiratory therapists work together to help even the most complex patients breathe on their own again. Our rehabilitation teams also help patients - including those on ventilation - start moving as early and as much as possible. Most of our hospitals have earned Joint Commission certification in Respiratory Failure, showing our commitment to delivering excellent respiratory care.

At Cornerstone, we take a comprehensive approach to care, bringing specialists from multiple disciplines together to develop a unique treatment plan for each patient. This interdisciplinary care team meets at the bedside regularly to discuss goals, milestones, treatment, and progress. We invite patients and families to participate in these meetings and make their voices heard.

Patients at Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals begin receiving gentle in-bed therapy as soon as they are able to, progressing to more advanced movements as they recover. Our physical therapists (PTs) help even the most complicated patients, including those on mechanical ventilation, get on their feet. We are grateful for all our PTs who help our patients take the next step in their recovery journeys.
