Botox
• Brand name for onabotulinumtoxinA.
• Been on the U.S. market longer (FDA-approved Cosmetic use in 2002).
• Used for glabellar lines (between eyebrows), forehead lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes.
• Also widely used medically (migraines, excessive sweating, bladder issues, muscle spasm disorders).
Dysport
• Brand name for abobotulinumtoxinA.
• FDA-approved for moderate-to-severe glabellar lines (2009).
• Sometimes preferred for larger areas or deeper wrinkles.
Both work by relaxing facial muscles to smooth dynamic wrinkles.
💉 Onset of Results
• Dysport: Often faster, with results seen in about 2–4 days.
• Botox: Typically takes 3–7 days to start working and full results by ~2 weeks.
👉 Some patients feel Dysport “kicks in quicker.”
📏 Unit & Dose Differences
• Units are not interchangeable between them.
• Roughly 2.5–3 units of Dysport = 1 unit of Botox in clinical practice — not a direct strength comparison, just a practical dosing ratio.
🧠 Diffusion / Spread
• Dysport tends to diffuse more after injection, which can be an advantage for larger treatment areas (like the forehead) but could be less precise in small areas near the eyes.
• Botox tends to stay more localized, which can allow more precise targeting.
⏱️ Duration of Effect
• Both generally last about 3–4 months, though individual results vary.
• Some small studies suggest Dysport may last slightly longer for some patients.
💰 Cost
• Botox historically costs more per unit; Dysport units cost less.
• However, because Dysport requires more units to achieve similar results, overall prices often end up comparable.
