“I can’t be hungry, I just ate.”

Actually, there are plenty of normal reasons hunger can show up again quickly. It’s not a willpower issue. Responding to your cues instead of fighting them is how you build body trust.

Why do ADHDers often struggle with food? 👇

Different kind of nervous system: the ADHD nervous system functions differently due to variations in brain structure, development, and neurochemistry. ADHDs are not motivated by the same things neurotypical people are, they are motivated by interest.

Solution: make meal prep, grocery shopping, and eating interesting! Make sure you choose foods you enjoy, add novelty by having a theme for meal prep each week, or incorporate different textures into your meal. Gamify cooking to make it interesting or save your favorite shows/podcasts for when you cook or eat.

Executive dysfunction: ADHD impacts executive function which is the brains management system for planning, organizing, self regulating, and goal-directed behavior. This makes it difficult to meal plan, difficult to choose what to eat, and often times causes ADHDers to put off eating.

Solution: Eat on a meal schedule and schedule out lunch on your work calendar to avoid skipping. Use a body double when menu planning or cooking. Simplify meal planning - use mix and match cooking with what you have on hand.

Working memory: deficits in working memory make it hard for ADHDers to hold onto information. This can make it difficult to remember what you brought on the grocery store, and difficulty remembering easy meal options.

Solution: Put meal options on your fridge - both what you bought for the week as well as easy meal ideas for when you don't have the energy or brain power to cook. Reorganize your fridge in an ADHD friendly way. Keep snack baskets on hand to remind you to eat!

Transitions: this is a type of executive function. ADHDers often find it difficult to switch between tasks (going from work to lunch).

Solutions: put what you were last working on on a sticky note so you can pick it back up when you return. Remind yourself, "pausing what I'm doing for a little bit to refuel will allow me to be more productive later!" Start with an easy task like filling up your water bottle, it'll be easier for to transition once you take that first small step.

About

Infatuated with all things food, Maggy Doherty is a Registered Dietitian from Dallas, Texas. As a UCLA student-athlete on the Women’s Diving team, she learned how to use food to take her health and performance to the next level. After earning her Master of Science in Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago and practicing as a clinical dietitian at Dallas’ Parkland Hospital, she is now the proud founder of Doherty Nutrition LLC.

When she’s not working, you’ll find Maggy hiking in the backcountry, searching for the world’s greatest brussels sprouts recipe, and mixing up an old fashioned.
