Some individuals on the autism spectrum struggle to move folate—a critical nutrient for brain development—into the central nervous system. Research shows that in these cases, Leucovorin (folinic acid) may help support language, cognition, and emotional regulation.

At Brain Treatment Center Dallas, we use EEG-guided rTMS (MeRT®) to personalize every treatment plan. When certain EEG patterns or clinical findings suggest folate-related differences, L-methyl folate or Leucovorin may be considered as an adjunct within our autism program.

While Leucovorin is not a stand-alone service, paired with personalized brain treatment, it may help support the pathways involved in communication and cognitive development.

If you’re exploring evidence-based autism therapies grounded in neuroscience, we’re here to help you understand your options with clarity and compassion.

What does “MeRT” really mean?

At Brain Treatment Center Dallas, we use MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy), an EEG-guided rTMS treatment.

That means your treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Instead, we start with a detailed qEEG brain map and an EKG to see how your brain networks communicate. Then we use that data to guide targeted rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) right where it’s needed.

Why is this important?

Because rTMS is one of the most well-researched brain stimulation therapies available, with decades of evidence supporting its use for:

✔️ Depression (including treatment-resistant depression)
✔️ Autism-related symptoms
✔️ Anxiety & PTSD
✔️ Cognitive issues, brain injuries, and more

MeRT builds on this proven technology and personalizes it for each individual.

One therapy for Autism that is getting a lot of attention is Leucovorin (folinic acid), a medical-grade form of folate (a B-vvitamin). It was just recently FDA-approved. For some individuals on the autism spectrum, Leucovorin has shown promise in improving language and thinking skills—progress that was once thought unlikely. Studies suggest that some with autism struggle with transporting folate (a critical nutrient for brain development) into the central nervous system. Researchers believe Leucovorin may support this process by improving folate delivery to the brain. Gain a better understanding of this treatment here, as explained by Board-certified Neurologist, Dr. Spencer O. Miller, who has been working with autism for many years.

Dr. Spencer Miller, Board-certified Neurologist, co-authored a new study that found a unique brainwave pattern in children with autism. This groundbreaking study connects this brainwave pattern to variations in the MTHFR gene, a key player in brain development and function. An EEG (electroencephalogram) is a simple, noninvasive tool that measures brain activity. It helps doctors understand how the brain works and identify areas needing support. The study found a unique 4.5-Hz rhythm in the brain activity of children with autism, particularly in specific brain regions. This discovery advances our understanding of autism and opens the door to more personalized and effective therapies. Read more about this here...
