Medical Minute: GLP-1 Receptor Agonists & Cancer Risk

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), commonly used for type 2 diabetes and obesity, appear to have little or no effect on the risk of most obesity-related cancers, according to a review of 48 randomized trials including over 94,000 participants.

While the findings are reassuring, longer-term studies are needed to fully understand potential risks or benefits. The effect on gastric cancer remains uncertain, and current trials weren’t specifically designed to evaluate cancer outcomes.

🩺 DCMS Public Health Update: Infant Botulism Outbreak Linked to Infant Formula

Public health officials, the CDC, and FDA are investigating a multistate outbreak of infant botulism connected to ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula. As of December 3, there are 39 confirmed cases across 18 states—all requiring hospitalization. No deaths have been reported, but the investigation remains open, and a nationwide recall has been issued.

Parents and caregivers should stop using any ByHeart formula immediately, including all lot numbers, all can sizes, and single-serve packets. If you have any remaining product, label it “DO NOT USE” and keep it stored safely for at least a month in case your state health department requests it for testing. Be sure to clean any bottles, scoops, or surfaces that may have touched the formula.

Symptoms of infant botulism can be subtle at first, often starting with constipation, poor feeding, a weak or altered cry, difficulty swallowing, or loss of head control. Because symptoms can take weeks to develop, parents should monitor infants closely and seek immediate medical care if any concerns arise.

Clinicians should diagnose based on clinical presentation and promptly consult the Infant Botulism Treatment & Prevention Program at 510-231-7600 for suspected cases. Treatment should begin without waiting for lab confirmation, and all cases must be reported to state public health authorities.

DCMS will continue to share updates to keep our medical community informed and prepared.

🩺 DCMS Medical Minute: Early Aspirin Discontinuation After PCI - What New Evidence Shows

A new multi-center European trial sheds light on a long-debated question: How long should dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) continue after PCI for low-risk acute MI patients who received complete revascularization and contemporary drug-eluting stents?

🔍 What the study found:
For low-risk post-MI patients with complete early revascularization, transitioning to P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy after 1 month of DAPT may offer similar protection with less bleeding risk—supporting a potential shift in managing select patients.

🩺 DCMS Public Health Update: Ultraprocessed Foods & Early-Onset Colorectal Neoplasia

A new analysis from the Nurses’ Health Study II offers important insight into the rising rates of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC). Researchers followed more than 29,000 women under age 50 and examined whether higher intake of ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) was linked to early colorectal neoplasia.

The findings show a clear pattern: women who consumed the highest levels of UPFs had a 45% higher risk of developing early-onset conventional adenomas compared with those who consumed the least. This association was specific to conventional adenomas—no significant link was found for serrated lesions. The results remained consistent even after adjusting for BMI, diabetes, and key dietary and lifestyle factors.

Because UPFs now make up a substantial portion of many adults’ caloric intake, these data underscore the potential role of diet quality in early colorectal tumorigenesis. Reducing UPF consumption may be an effective strategy to lower the risk of early-onset colorectal disease and support long-term gastrointestinal health.

DCMS will continue to share emerging research to help clinicians stay informed on trends impacting patient health.
