A friend posed a question on here today and it’s something I thinks makes all the difference. The question is basically, why do 4 people get the same infection or disease and have such wildly variable outcomes, from no symptoms at all to death?
Here’s my response and a picture from the Alliance of Natural Health International which describes my sentiments in graphic form:
My answer to this after 15+ years of practice as a functional/natural health doctor is that your observations could describe potentially any infection or disease out there, regardless of its well-established virulence and rate of death or recovery. Why does one person get a sniffle or headache or nothing and another lands in the bed with fever, incapacitated by body aches and total exhaustion, and yet another ends up as a puddle of goo in the hospital and never makes it out - all from the same infection at the same time, the same year, similar situations and exposure...? What is the main variable here? It’s you. It’s the terrain in your body, not the actual germ that makes all the difference. Are some germs more virulent or deadly than others? Of course. But the difference is the terrain inside the body. The terrain is the sum total of your state of health and balance in the body. We can speak of environment, yes that makes a difference as well, but the terrain is how you respond to the environment. It’s how full nutrient reservoirs in the body are, it’s pH, it’s toxic load including chemicals, metals, it’s how the structure responds to injuries and supports but doesn’t interfere with the nervous system, it’s the health of the microbiome in the gut it’s how much excess weight you have, it’s your daily choices. Yes genetics play a role but not as much as we’ve been led to believe. Genetics are influenced in a concrete physical way by lifestyle and this terrain of which each of us has control. The sum of it all is how much stress is on your body/mind complex? Not just emotional or mental stress but chemical, structural...everything that causes any negative stress at all. My entire practice has been about teaching people this very concept and how to make it better. You increase your odds against any disease, not by treating the disease but by treating the patient. The terrain is everything. It’s not your ticket out if this world alive, but it does determine to a great extent what the ride is going to be like.
