This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating a couple whose shared belief in giving back led them to the American Heart Association. ❤️

Alyssa Roman, Senior Development Director in New York City, was drawn to the American Heart Association by a lifelong connection to mission-driven work. Inspired by her grandmother, who previously raised funds for Heart and still proudly owns her Red Dress Pin, Alyssa saw her own family’s experiences with heart disease reflected in a mission that touches nearly every household.

Through Alyssa’s work, her husband, Kevin Roman, gained a front-row view of life at Heart. After volunteering at the Wall Street Run & Heart Walk and seeing the passion of the volunteers and teams, Kevin felt called to join the mission himself. He now serves as Development Manager for the New Jersey Heart Walks, carrying forward a commitment shaped by family history and a shared desire to make a difference together.

Today, Alyssa and Kevin support one another across teams, events, and markets, leaning on their shared understanding of the work and its impact. Their “why” is rooted in family, service, and a belief that the work they do together truly matters.

For nearly four decades, Gina Klofft has woken up every day feeling excited and grateful to make a real difference through her work at Heart.

She joined the American Heart Association in 1986 after meeting hiring managers who were kind, genuine, and welcoming: values that would shape her entire journey. Her path to leadership was built step by step, from receptionist to office manager, division director, senior director, and now executive director—proof of what growth at Heart can truly look like.

For Gina, the mission is why she stays and why she hopes to spend 50 years at Heart.

Her “why” includes her late boss and dear friend, who passed away from heart disease at just 34 years old. More recently, it includes her father, who underwent successful open-heart surgery in April 2024. These moments reinforce what she’s always known: the work is urgent, and it matters.

“I am blessed and honored to serve this mission,” Gina shares.

Along the way, Gina became known for building meaningful relationships, inspiring volunteers and teams, and leading with passion and energy. She credits mentors, flexibility during challenging life moments, and a culture of kindness for helping her thrive.

Thank you, Gina, for your leadership and loyalty to saving lives. ❤️

A Wear Red Day in the life of a Marketing Communications Manager ❤️

Did you know owning a pet can be good for your heart? ❤️ Research shows pets can help lower blood pressure, ease stress, and keep us moving.

This Heart Month, we’re celebrating our extra coworkers and asked: How does your pet help keep you healthy? Here’s what we heard:

- Lewie turns everyday walks into mini adventures with hikes and fresh air
- Lucy knows exactly when it’s time to slow down and breathe
- Milo makes sure playtime happens, weather is no excuse
- Nacho is always up for movement and quality time (even in the snow)
- Charlie, a retired racing greyhound, still believes in daily walks
- Shadow keeps mealtime mindful and nourishing
- Zoya Griselda stays close all day, bringing comfort and calm
- Lilikoi lowers the pressure—literally—during anxious moments
- And Neal reminds our CEO, Nancy Brown, just how meaningful companionship can be

We’re grateful for the pets who show up for us every day in ❤️🐾

When Mara first joined the American Heart Association, she was eager to learn, and she found a mentor who helped her see beyond her role. Through honest conversations and steady guidance, she built critical thinking and problem-solving skills that shaped her career.

Fourteen years later, Mara knew it was her turn to pay it forward.

That’s what led her to become a mentor in our L.E.A.D. mentoring program, where she was paired with Brooke. From the start, Mara focused on creating a space rooted in empathy, trust, and honesty, helping Brooke not only work toward her goals but also recognize her own potential.

Brooke had just made a major career pivot, joining Heart as a senior project coordinator after a background in education. The transition felt big, but it was familiar to Mara. She’d been there before. That shared experience opened the door to intentional conversations about transferable skills, confidence, and long-term growth within the Association.

Through this consistent support, Brooke has obtained her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, which is a rigorous and challenging process, Mara testified.

While their roles are mentor and mentee, both say they’ve grown equally. Mara says becoming a mentor has helped her exercise a different leadership skill set than she uses in her daily role. Brooke has learned to be bold as she pinpoints where she wants to move next in her career, taking actionable steps like her PMP, to get there. And together, they are thankful for an organization that prioritizes workplace connections and career growth.

Anna Heerdt found her dream career at the American Heart Association through her mom’s fight for her life.

In 2021, Anna’s mom was diagnosed with end-stage congestive heart failure. She was healthy, had no family history, and despite being a nurse herself, she was misdiagnosed three times before finally getting answers. After two years living with an LVAD, she received a life-saving heart transplant in 2023.

At the time of her heart failure diagnosis, Anna was a college senior. After graduation, she went on to work at an advertising agency while also serving as one of her mom’s caregivers. Anna's mom stayed with her during recovery after her heart transplant, where Anna was able to help her heal and adjust to a second chance at life.

Six months later, Anna came across a job posting at Heart and sent it to her mom.

“She said, ‘Anna, you have to apply. This sounds perfect for you.’”

“That’s when it clicked,” Anna says. “I realized I could channel everything we went through into work that helps others understand their risk and prevent heart disease and stroke.”

Now an Associate Marketing Communications Manager for Western New York and Vermont, Anna connects with volunteers, supporters, and survivors in a way that’s “personal, genuine, and meaningful.”

“Heart disease does not discriminate,” Anna says. “If my mom’s story inspires even one person to speak up for their health, we’ve made a difference.”

Alex Price has spent the past five years driven by one thing: impact. She initially joined Heart because she believes in our mission and is inspired by the difference we are making in her community. She stays because the work is innovative, evolving, and rooted in saving lives. “I’m always learning,” Alex shares, “because Heart is always moving forward.”

Her passion for growth led her to join Emerging Hearts, an Employee Resource Group (ERG) for early-career professionals that promotes development and networking. She soon stepped into a leadership role for the ERG, creating opportunities for colleagues to grow.

Leading Emerging Hearts helped Alex build relationships across the organization and strengthen her leadership skills—experience that supported her career advancement to become the Executive Director for the Triangle Market.

Today, Alex is proud of the ERG’s growth to over 170 members. Her journey shows how ERGs at Heart build connection, empower growth, and develop the next generation of leaders.
