If your goal is to exclusively breastfeed, what happens in the first few days matters more than most moms realize. Breastfeeding is supply and demand from the very beginning.
Your baby isn’t just eating… they’re building your supply!
Those frequent feeds (especially that second night in the hospital 😅 - iykyk)
•that’s cluster feeding
•and it’s your baby’s way of saying: “I’m going to need more milk tomorrow.”
Milk typically comes in around day 3–5 (sometimes a little later after a C-section), so in those early days:
• Feed on demand
• Let them cluster feed
• Match your baby’s rhythm, not the clock
• Don’t be discouraged if you’re not “seeing” milk yet- the drops that you get the first couple days are called colostrum which is very high in calories AND nutrients!
Sometimes early supplementation (when not medically necessary) can make it harder for your body to keep up with your baby’s needs.
Save this for when you’re in the early days 🩷 & please know that the first couple weeks are breastfeeding can be extra challenging, but it gets better! However, if your mental health is suffering because of your feeding goals, hear me when I say you are no less of a mom for supplementing/formula feeding than the moms who breastfeed for years 🫶🏻 a happy mom is a good mom, and that’s what Mothergood is all about: putting the good in motherhood.
