Do flat feet get worse with age?
Flat feet can worsen over time, particularly when the tendons that support the arch begin to weaken or the arch gradually collapses. While some individuals have stable flatfoot without symptoms, others may experience progressive changes as they age.
Wear and tear, arthritis, weight changes, and repetitive stress on the foot can all contribute to progression. As the arch lowers, the ankle may roll inward, increasing strain along the inside of the foot and ankle and leading to discomfort or swelling.
If left untreated, progressive flatfoot can alter walking mechanics and reduce joint stability. Over time, this may affect balance, endurance, and overall mobility.
Early evaluation allows for strategies that may slow progression and reduce discomfort. Proper footwear, bracing, and targeted strengthening exercises can provide additional support and improve alignment. Because flatfoot severity and progression vary, management should always be individualized based on a thorough assessment. As a Dallas foot and ankle surgeon, I focus on preserving alignment and protecting long-term function.
