Meet Antoinette Rogers, Director of Programs for the Delta Research and Educational Foundation (DREF), an Alzheimer’s Association national partner. Her dedication to service and community empowerment has shaped her journey in raising dementia awareness.
Antoinette first saw the impact of Alzheimer’s when she was asked to sit with a life-long family friend — a retired teacher, church member, sorority sister and neighbor — who was living with the disease. “It was difficult for me to see her go from an active, vibrant community member to someone who needed around-the-clock care. I decided to educate myself about the disease in case I was called on again.”

Later in life, Antoinette helped care for her father who had Parkinson’s disease. While caring for him, she attended an event hosted by her local Alzheimer’s Association chapter. She found the event to be informative and the community very supportive. She brought back what she learned to DREF whose research team had undertaken exploring health disparities impacting African Americans.

DREF and the Association began collaborating on programming, hosting webinar series on what dementia is, resources available to caregivers and ways to promote brain and body health. “We share a commitment to promote health and wellness, and to limiting and eradicating the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia.”

Her experience caring for her father, coupled with her work with the Alzheimer’s Association, has helped Antoinette provide care for her mentor who is now living with dementia. It has also motivated her to continue making a difference for others. “I love life and see it as a gift. I want to learn and do as much as I can to help others (and myself) live well with longevity.”

💜 Thank you, Antoinette, for your dedication, partnership and commitment to advancing health equity in African American communities nationwide. Together, we are stronger. Together, we can make a difference.
