Jim Gengo wasn’t going to let colon cancer steal one more moment from the people he loves. ❤️‍🩹

Jim is the kind of husband, dad and friend who shows up — especially when it’s hard. But in 2024, life started to narrow: he was exhausted, dizzy and short of breath doing simple chores, and even getting dressed felt overwhelming.

In January 2025, bloodwork revealed severe iron-deficiency anemia, a sign he could be bleeding internally. A FIT (f***l immunochemical test) showed blood in his stool. Dr. Steven Gorelick expedited Jim’s colonoscopy because of these red-flag signs, and it revealed a large tumor.

From there, Jim’s care moved without delay: Colorectal surgeon Dr. Marc Casasanta removed the tumor through a robotic-assisted surgery at Danbury Hospital. When pathology confirmed stage 3B colon cancer, Jim continued treatment with chemotherapy at the Danbury Hospital Praxair Cancer Center, under the care of medical oncologist Dr. Ravneet Bajwa and surgical oncologist Dr. Eric D**g.

What carried him through was love in action — his wife Karen’s constant devotion, three sons who gave him purpose and friends who kept him steady, including the enduring influence of his late friend, Kevin Hartery.

Today, after treatment for advanced colon cancer, Jim has no evidence of disease, and his message is simple. ⚠️

Don’t ignore ongoing fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness or blood in your stool. Find care you trust and lean into those you love for help carry you through. 💪🏽

March is National Nutrition Month, which makes it a great time to rethink some of the health "ideas" we hear all the time.

A lot of nutrition advice online focuses on restriction, guilt and quick fixes. But real health is usually much simpler and much more sustainable.

Your body doesn’t need detox teas 🚫
Carbohydrates are not the enemy 🍞
Eating less isn’t always better ⚖️
And no single food determines your health 🍎

Instead, small shifts can make a meaningful difference. Building balanced meals, paying attention to hunger cues and letting go of food guilt can support a healthier and more sustainable relationship with food.

Swipe through for a few reminders about what a more balanced approach to nutrition can look like without fads or diet culture. ➡️

From Connecticut to Nepal 🌍

Dr. Mark Carrasco recently returned from a medical mission trip to Nepal, where he helped provide sports medicine and primary care services to underserved communities. He secured a Global Humanitarian Service Project Grant through the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine to make the trip possible.

Dr. Carrasco joined a team of physicians and nurses dedicated to advancing healthcare access around the world.

His passion for global health and serving others carries into his work here at home. Dr. Carrasco currently sees patients at Brookfield Primary Care and will begin seeing patients at his new Sports Medicine (non-operative Orthopedics) clinic at New Milford Hospital next month.

We’re proud to support care that makes a difference near and far. 💙

Winter had its time. The cozy nights, the earlier bedtimes, the slower mornings — and the quiet permission to do a little less. 🌙

That wasn't laziness. It was your biology responding to light.

But the light is changing now. Daylight Saving Time sends stronger signals to your circadian rhythm, and your body actually notices. Sleep, energy, mood and motivation all start to shift.

The dark asked you to rest. The light helps you move forward again. 🌷☀️

Colorectal cancer is showing up in younger people. So, what can you do? 💙

✅ If you’re 45 or older, talk to your doctor about scheduling a colonoscopy.

✅ If you’re younger than 45 and something feels off, don’t wait. Trust your gut. Literally.

No matter your age, it’s important to talk with your doctor about your personal risk. Based on your health history, they may recommend starting screenings earlier than 45.

The good news? Colorectal cancer is one of the most treatable cancers.

Swipe through to learn the signs, risk factors and why a colonoscopy could be one of the most important appointments you make. 👉

In honor of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we’re resharing Tara’s story. 💙

After losing her husband to colon cancer, Tara made a lifechanging decision — shifting from emergency nursing to endoscopy so she could help others through screening, early detection and education.

Today, she reminds us why this month matters:

Screenings save lives. Early detection changes outcomes. And if something doesn’t feel right, it’s worth getting checked.

Thank you, Tara, for turning personal loss into purpose, and for helping protect so many families in our community.

If you’re due for a screening, make the call. 💙
