And we’re back with round two of pine trees! Once again, we are looking at the sand pine (Pinus clausa), the most common pine found in sandy soils of the south Florida region.

Besides the medicinal uses discussed yesterday, pine can also make a great snack! The needles can be eaten cooked, or even raw if you enjoy a stronger flavor. The inner bark can also be used, either cut-up and cooked in a stew, or powdered with other nuts and grains into a flour mixture. And of course, most everyone has heard about pine nuts… not only are they nutritious and delicious, but you can usually find them in the grocery store!

As for their spiritual uses, unfortunately (yet again) much of the knowledge of our indigenous peoples’ ritual practices using pine have been lost. Thankfully, there is much to be gained by studying pagan practices that continue to this day. Many people are not aware that most of their Christmas traditions like wreaths, Christmas trees, and mistletoe were carried over from the pagan holidays of Saturnalia and Yule (also known as the winter solstice)!

To the pagans, the tree that remained green even in the height of winter and could still provide them with fire, shelter, and sustenance was truly a gift from the gods. Used in ritual magic, it symbolizes healing and protection. Magically warding the home from visitors (physical or ethereal) with bad intentions was the original reason why people hung wreaths made of pine branches on their front doors. And in case the bad juju was already inside the house, dried needles and cones were also added to the hearth as a form of smudging (like burning sage or palo santo).

And as far as Christmas trees are concerned, pines were originally placed in the home and decorated because it was believed that doing so would ensure that the light and warmth of the spring would come quickly! Traditionally, the colors used were red and gold. Red symbolizes warmth and love, and gold represents prosperity and the return of the sun.🌲
