Celebrating our maritime medical professionals ✨

We were deeply moved by a message from guest Mr. Strusi, who recently sailed on an expedition cruise to Antarctica and took the time to recognise the exceptional care provided by the onboard medical team.

A few days into the voyage, Mr. Strusi experienced chest and arm pain, symptoms that could have signaled a serious cardiac issue. Thanks to the swift response of the medical team, he received immediate assessment, including ECG, X‑ray, and targeted blood tests.

Fortunately, cardiac concerns were quickly ruled out, and the team identified a respiratory issue instead. With prompt treatment and attentive follow‑up throughout the cruise, he recovered quickly and was able to enjoy the expedition with peace of mind.

His message to the medical team speaks volumes: Heartfelt thank you to Dr. Ahmad (centre), and to nurses Maelyn Delima (right) and Christian Salamatin (left), for their warm welcome and the excellent care they provided. ❤️

🚢 Cruise ships install new air systems for efficiency

What if improving indoor air quality on cruise ships could also reduce energy use?

An article from The Manila Times highlights how cruise operators are adopting next‑generation air purification systems, powered by The Pyure Company Dynamic Protection technology, to reduce secondhand smoke and improve onboard air quality, while also helping ships lower overall energy consumption.

With sustainability expectations rising across the maritime sector, solutions that enhance welfare and operational efficiency are becoming increasingly important. VIKAND air purification solution helps to:
✅ Improved air quality for guests and crew
✅ Reduced smoke‑related pollutants
✅ Lower strain on HVAC systems
✅ Contribution to energy‑efficiency and environmental goals

The cruise industry continues to innovate with technologies that make ships cleaner, safer, and more efficient, an important step forward for modern maritime operations.

AI is rapidly reshaping healthcare at sea, but not by replacing clinicians. It’s enhancing them.

Our latest article underscores a critical reality: in remote, resource‑limited maritime environments, human intuition, experience, and real‑time judgment remain irreplaceable.

Clinicians at sea often operate with incomplete information, limited diagnostic tools, and communication delays, making their blend of experience and evidence‑based practice essential for safe decision‑making.

As technology evolves, the real opportunity isn’t choosing between human or artificial intelligence, it’s harnessing both. The future of maritime healthcare is a powerful partnership where technology supports, accelerates, and augments human expertise.

For decades, maritime asset management has focused on the vessel. But have we overlooked the industry’s most valuable asset?

In a sector where every system, component, and process is meticulously maintained, seafarers have too often been treated as a cost centre rather than a strategic investment. That mindset can’t continue, not if the industry wants resilience, safety, and long‑term operational continuity.

Featured in the latest IMPA magazine, Peter Hult, VIKAND CEO, highlights why a shift toward people‑centred asset management is essential: “𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘸 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴’ 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥: 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺, 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦, 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦.”

🗣️ Time to Talk Day: Keep the Conversation Going at Sea

Today on , we’re reminding everyone across the maritime industry how important it is to keep talking, and to keep supporting each other. Life at sea can be isolating, and some experiences still feel too big to express. But every conversation counts.

At VIKAND, we’re here to make those conversations easier and ensure no one has to face challenges alone. How we support crew & operators:
✅ 24/7 crew helpline for immediate, confidential care
✅ Anonymous feedback tools to give every seafarer a safe voice
✅ Mental health & crisis support to strengthen resilience onboard
✅ OneHealth by VIKAND, our telehealth programme, adaptable for any maritime setting

We’ve made great progress in destigmatising mental health problems and improving attitudes. But we need to keep going.

Let’s continue the conversations at sea, and be there for each other.

Healthcare isn’t a checkbox, it’s a commitment.

In our industry, emotional resilience, physical fitness, and the working environment are inseparable, each directly affecting the others. When these factors reinforce one another, they support healthier crews, safer operations, and stronger vessel performance.

Imagine operating a vessel where:
✔ Crew feel supported and emotionally resilient
✔ Physical fitness is proactively strengthened
✔ The working environment enhances safety and judgement

This is what a welfare‑first approach makes possible every day. When your crew thrives, operations become safer, decisions become sharper, and the vessel becomes more stable and efficient.

When welfare becomes a priority, it becomes the foundation of a stronger, more responsible operation.

Let’s support our crew members together. ⚓

🛟Tackling a silent mental health crisis: just one su***de among crew members is one too many.

Between 2019 and 2023, 11% of all seafarer deaths were due to su***de and the real number is likely higher. Today, su***de has overtaken accidental injuries as the leading cause of death at sea.

Isolation is part of life onboard, but the biggest triggers often come from conflicts, harassment, and poor leadership. As Martin Hedman stresses, the solution cannot rest solely on individuals in crisis. We need a top-down approach: companies must take genuine responsibility, implement clear policies, and create a culture of care. Voluntary goodwill isn’t enough. Regulation and proactive leadership are key to breaking stigma and saving lives.

Isolation is part of what being a seafarer is. However, there are a lot of things that can be easily changed.
