A 21-year-old male crew member serving onboard a cargo vessel reported a three-day history of perianal pain, swelling, and discharge accompanied by headache, dizziness, and intermittent chills.

Given the vessel’s remote location, the telehealth team at OneHealth by VIKAND promptly assessed the case and initiated treatment, including antibiotics, pain management, hydration support, and warm sitz baths. Working closely with the Vessel Command, daily updates on the crew member’s condition and treatment response enabled the telehealth clinicians to adjust care in real time, extending antibiotic therapy and revising pain control as needed.

After 11 days of continuous monitoring, the patient was safely disembarked for definitive shoreside treatment without deviation from the voyage. Throughout the case, effective coordination between telehealth and onboard leadership ensured safe, evidence-based care, safeguarded the crew member’s wellbeing, and maintained the vessel’s operational continuity.

As we marked World Mental Health Day last month, Martin Hedman emphasised three interconnected priorities the maritime industry must commit to in order to ensure sustainable and equitable access to mental health care for all seafarers:

1️⃣ Education and cultural transformation
2️⃣ Adoption of global standards and policy alignment
3️⃣ Financial accessibility

These pillars are key to creating a lasting framework for crew wellbeing across the industry.

New data from VIKAND reveals a clear picture of the medical challenges faced by crews onboard and underscores why the industry must rethink healthcare at sea.

Since August 2024, VIKAND’s OneHealth’s telehealth service has tracked medical encounters and follow-ups, providing unique data-driven insights into crew health. These are not rare or extraordinary conditions, but everyday health issues that are magnified by life onboard.

The OneHealth data makes one point unmistakably clear: the most common health challenges at sea follow predictable patterns. By acting on this insight, maritime companies can shift from reactive emergency care to proactive asset management, ultimately safeguarding both human and commercial resources.

Experience the benefits of having a Doctor in your pocket

Medical care at sea is limited, and onboard teams are often minimally equipped to diagnose and treat even the simplest conditions. This often leads to missed diagnosis, worsening conditions, a greater burden of chronic disease, and in some cases, unnecessary costly medical disembarkations.

To combat these risks, VIKAND offers a proactive 24/7 remote health care service that works anywhere on earth – even in low-bandwidth areas – to connect with certified maritime healthcare professionals. OneHealth by VIKAND is a total healthcare solution which optimises the long-term management of physical and mental health conditions by engaging proactively with crew members.

The finalists for the 2025 Seatrade Maritime Maritime Crew Connect Global Awards have been announced, and we’re honored to be shortlisted for the Health and Wellbeing at Sea Award.

Our focus has always been to help the maritime industry take a more proactive approach to healthcare, supporting crew members to stay healthy, not just treating them when they fall ill. We’ve witnessed firsthand how this approach reduces risk, lower costs, and makes a career at sea more sustainable and rewarding.

This recognition reflects the dedication of our team, who work tirelessly to improve health and safety at sea every day. We’re grateful to be included among such respected peers, and wish all finalists the very best of luck on the night.

A 45-year-old male senior officer serving onboard a cargo vessel reported feeling persistently low over the past year. He described emotional fatigue, social withdrawal and difficulty sleeping, averaging around five hours per night.

Despite these symptoms, he continued to perform his duties, maintain personal care and denied any thoughts of self-harm. However, given his senior position and its direct influence on operational safety and crew wellbeing, the vessel’s leadership team reached out to VIKAND via telehealth for real-time support.

In this case, timely telehealth intervention not only supported the officer’s recovery - from onboard to home setting - but also safeguarded onboard safety and continuity of the vessel’s operations.

VIKAND Air Purification System Cuts Fuel Use and Emissions

HVAC systems are among the largest onboard energy consumers, accounting for up to 50% of total usage. VIKAND’s patented solution, powered by The Pyure Company Technology®, increases the recirculation of clean air, reducing the need for energy-intensive intake of hot, humid outside air.

This lowers HVAC load, engine demand, and fuel consumption, resulting in significant carbon reductions.

Every vessel has a beating heart, but it’s not in the engine room nor the bridge. It’s the onboard medical centre.

When designed and operated with foresight, the medical centre is the most critical safeguard for passengers and crew. It provides care, ensures safety, and underpins confidence in the vessel’s ability to navigate not just seas but human needs.

Building such a centre is both an art and a science, balancing regulatory requirements, human factors, and practical workflows with compassion and clinical excellence.

Discover how your onboard medical centre can become a cornerstone of safety, wellbeing, and operational excellence.
