"To me recovery is more than just stay away from the drink and the drug. It was a complete tear down of my old actions and beliefs and behaviors. I had to start from scratch. I had to build a strong foundation on who I am at my core and who I want to be and what I want to achieve in my life and from there I build towards my future. It means taking accountability for the hurt I've caused and focusing only in my wrong doings and no one else's because I have the power to make my life better or worse.
I can only control my life and change my future. It means being present, being emotionally available to my daughter and my family. It means being consistent and considerate and sitting with all of the uncomfortable and painful feelings I've always ran from and built walls up against. It means accepting my past and my mistakes and using that as strength to never go back to who I was and what I've done to harm only loved ones.
Recovery to me is rigorous honesty and effort in action. And change. I had to let go of my ego and realize I do not know how to live life on my own. Today I'm open to suggestions and I can take advice.
Today I walk with clarity in what I want and what I'm willing to do to get it and I'm prepared to do whatever that takes to be the father, son, brother, employee that my family and I deserve me to be."
