Mindfulness Matters: Simple Skills to Manage Stress & Stay Present 🌿🧠

Life can be fast, overwhelming, and full of distractions — but mindfulness gives us the power to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the present moment. Practicing mindfulness regularly can reduce stress, improve focus, and increase emotional well-being.

šŸ’” What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention — on purpose, in the present moment, and without judgment. It’s about becoming aware of your thoughts, emotions, and body in real time.

šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø Mindfulness Techniques to Try:

Deep Breathing
Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4. Repeat. This calms the nervous system and centers your mind.

Body Scan
Slowly shift your focus from head to toe, noticing any tension or sensations without trying to change them.

5-4-3-2-1 Grounding
Name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste. Great for anxiety.

Mindful Walking
Take a walk and notice each step, the rhythm of your breath, and how your body moves.

Observe Your Thoughts
Imagine your thoughts like leaves floating on a stream — watch them pass without holding on or pushing away.

Self-Compassion Statements
Try saying: ā€œThis is hard right now, but I’m doing my best.ā€

✨ You don’t have to do everything at once. Start with one practice, even for 1–2 minutes a day. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s presence.

🪷 Take a breath. Be here now. You’ve got this.

šŸ“Œ Save this post to revisit these skills anytime life feels overwhelming.

🧠 What Are the ā€œSunday Scariesā€? Let’s Talk About It.

If you find yourself feeling anxious, restless, or down as Sunday evening rolls in—you’re not alone. This common experience, often called the Sunday Scaries, is your mind and body anticipating the week ahead.

But why does it happen?

šŸ’ Here’s what might be going on:
• Your brain is shifting from rest mode to performance mode
• You’re anticipating stress, deadlines, or overwhelm
• Your nervous system is reacting to unresolved anxiety or burnout
• You haven’t had enough restorative rest or emotional space during the weekend

🌿 These feelings are common, but they don’t have to take over your Sundays. Here are a few therapist-approved coping skills to help manage the Sunday Scaries:

āœ… Plan something small & enjoyable for Monday to look forward to
āœ… Do a gentle Sunday evening routine—think candles, tea, music, or journaling
āœ… Limit screen time or work-related tasks before bed
āœ… Practice grounding techniques like deep breathing or a mindfulness app
āœ… Write down your to-do list for the week to ease mental clutter
āœ… Get outside—nature and movement reduce anxiety

✨ The Sunday Scaries are your body asking for support and balance. Therapy can help you get to the root of that stress and build sustainable tools that work for you.

ā€œWe are all a little broken, but last time I checked broken crayons still colorā€

Being a therapist gives me a lot of opportunities to self-reflect, which is most of the time a positive thing and helps me grow everyday. However, I have come to realize not only for myself, but also most of my clients, that self-reflection from a critical point of view does not bring growth. My inner critic brings nothing but feelings of intense self-hatred and shame.

In the past I always thought the feelings of guilt and shame were the same thing and I used them interchangeably. But, as I’ve grown as a person and therapist, I have come to teach my clients (and myself) about the extreme difference between the two emotions.

Guilt allows us to examine our mistakes, learn from them, and ask others for forgiveness while also validating their feelings. However, shame intensifies our inner critic. It teaches us to hate ourselves and carry our mistakes with us wherever we go. We often feel scared to let go of shame and our inner-critic because we feel like if we don’t keep it close we are giving ourselves a pass for our mistakes, or worse we fear backsliding to moments that caused pain to ourselves and others. We feel like positive self-talk means we are ā€œtoo confidentā€ in ourselves and worry what other people might think if we say something kind about ourselves. Our society encourages self-love, but truly most people feel afraid to embody it.

We should be encouraging ourselves and others to work towards letting go of the past and extending ourselves more grace. Letting go and being kind to ourselves doesn’t mean we are ā€œgiving ourselves a passā€, it means we are choosing to put our energy into continued growth. Releasing our shame doesn’t mean we are perfect or haven’t made a lot of mistakes in the past, it means we are putting our energy into embracing moments of joy and building more happiness.

We are so excited to finally start this journey and begin to offer therapy services to our local community! We've had to overcome many obstacles to get here and have spent more than a decade working in the Mental Health field to prepare for this new adventure!

We are incredibly grateful for all of the support we have received along the way from our friends and family. We know Rose and Thorn Counseling wouldn't be possible without all of the love and encouragement you have poured into us along the way.
