About 10% of all abdominal hernias in adults are umbilical hernias. Unlike most hernias, which develop in adolescence or adulthood, 20% of babies are born with umbilical hernias. An umbilical hernia occurs at the umbilicus (belly button) when a loop of the intestine pushes through the umbilical ring, a small opening in a fetus’s abdominal muscles through which the umbilical cord connects a fetus to its mother while in the womb—passes. Umbilical hernias occur most often in newborns, and 90% will naturally close by the time the child reaches 5 years of age. That been said, umbilical hernias are seen at all ages and in both sexes.

This is one of my very young and active patients who recently presented with this excruciatingly painful right groin hernia. He has had his hernia for years which did grow in size over the last few months. He did not give him the chance to consider elective surgery. He ended up with emergency surgery.

Inguinal hernias, also known as groin hernias, occur when a bit of tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the muscles between the upper thigh and the lower abdomen.

Inguinal hernias are usually caused by an opening in the muscle wall that should have closed before birth but instead remained open. Because of that abnormality, there is a weak spot in the abdomen.

When tissue pushes through that weak spot, it creates a bulge or lump, that tends to be painful, though not necessarily dangerous unless it strangulates or it blocks the bowel.
