Workout Tips for this Hectic Week
You know what’s the No.1 Excuse for not working out……
Lack of time.
We are all busy handling multiple hit list items and rushing around from here to there this last week of 2022. But you know what… believe me there are people even busier than you are working out right now.
If you do a little inspection, you’ll discover that you do have the time to work out – and YOU deserve to use that time for YOU.
My motto is “Everything Counts”, so squeezing in just a few minutes of physical activity has benefits for your fitness and health. There are multiple studies backing up this fact.
So here are 10 practical tips to take care of YOU and get some fitness in:
1. Wake Up Earlier- While sleep is definitely important to you, could you go to bed a little earlier, so you can get up to work out before your day starts? Working out in the morning has many benefits including boosting energy, regulating appetite, improving your fat burning (I could go on and on about this one) and the biggest is that its completed first thing before even though you had the best intentions other things take over the longer you wait.( my most successful clients come to train at 5:30 a.m.)
2. Reduce Media- If you could record how much time you spend on surfing the internet, emails, watching TV and social (Facebook, Instagram…) on either your phone, laptop, TV etc…. Just a few minutes here and thee can add up. Cut out some of that screen time and well you suddenly have some time on your hands to work out even 10-15 minutes’ counts (remember Everything Counts).
3. TV Watch Actively- We all watch TV, so why not try to incorporate some exercise. Every commercial break get some pushups, squats, planks etc.… in. Or if a treadmill available walk and watch.
4. Commute- I call this disguised exercise (ask my mom about this one) Park the furthest away from door (side note, less chances of getting your car dinged) and instead of elevators and escalators take the stairs.
5. Make it Routine- Even start out with 10 minutes and get in the habit to make it a routine. Think brushing your teeth.
6. Stop Sitting- Get up every 20 minutes, set an alarm on your phone or in my case my Garmin watch buzzes and tells me “To Move”. Other options are standing desks, and turn household chores into some exercise, while waiting for the microwave or stove, hold a wall squat or do some wall pushups, etc.
7. Mix Socializing with Activity- Make your social time more active by planning events that get you moving. Go for a walking talk, get the family on a hike. Get a workout buddy to get some form of exercise in the day. There are a lot of ways to get more activity into your social calendar.
8. Schedule an Appointment for You- If you had an appointment in your calendar for business meeting or a doctors apt, etc. You wouldn’t miss it. Well guess what working out is actually more important than any other obligation because when you take care of YOU first you perform better as a parent, worker, or any other roles you have.
9. Find an Activity You Love- Choose an activity that you actually enjoy doing and look forward to. You will be more likely to do it and consider it FUN.
10. Say NO- This is a big one, and I have written tons about this. Time to look at your priorities and remember there is nothing wrong with saying NO. We all have obligations to others, but you have a bigger obligation to YOURSELF to take care of your body and health.
Please remember exercise keeps you healthy and gives you energy in that busy life of yours.
So, think of exercise as a way to destress and do something for YOU!
