Since 1970, Darien EMS-Post 53 has provided the town of Darien, Connecticut with high-quality emerge

Darien EMS - Post 53, founded by Bud Doble to provide his son and his friends with first-hand experience regarding the dangers of drugs and alcohol, now provides 24/7 intermediate life support coverage to the town of Darien, responding to over 1,500 emergencies each year. Beginning with a first-aid tent and a converted telephone van as an ambulance, Post 53 currently operates with three ambulances and two flycars. The membership consists of more than 80 young adults and 30 Adult Advisors who volunteer innumerable hours providing high quality, professional EMS care to the community.

Thank you to the local businesses who have generously donated raffle prizes for the Nielsen’s Holiday Shopping Event. Their generosity will add to the fun of the evening and help raise additional support for Post 53’s life saving work in the Darien community.

Join us at Nielsen’s Florist and Garden Shop on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 5:30 to 8pm (with early access at 5pm for guests 65 and older) for holiday shopping, floral arranging demonstrations, live music, and a chance to win gifts from some of Darien’s favorite shops. Guests will receive a 10% discount on purchases, and 10% of sales from the event will benefit Post 53.

Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween! 🎃👻🍭
Last Sunday, we hosted our annual Haunted House at Post 53 headquarters — and it was a blast! From three levels of fright in the haunted house to kids’ games, face painting, ambulance tours, and more!
We’re so glad so many families could join in on the fun! If we didn’t see you there, we hope to see you at our annual Nielsen’s Holiday Shopping Event on 11/13.

🚨 Happy First Responder Friday! 🚨

This week’s spotlight is our one and only Vice President of Finance, Maddy Smaldon!

During her time at Post, Maddy has served as Assistant to Publicity, Officer of Interiors, and now, after being elected this past spring, holds one of our influential Elected Officer positions within the organization.

💭 Maddy’s advice for incoming Posties:

“Be grateful and enjoy it! Despite the time commitment it can take up in your life, it is all worth it. Post is such a unique experience, and it is important to stay grateful for this unique community. Make the most of your time here!”

🌟 Who inspires her:

“Every single member within Post 53. Everyone here motivates me to work hard and be my best. I have created some of my closest friendships in life from this organization and feel so supported by this community.”

🚨 Happy First Responder Friday! 🚨
This week’s spotlight is none other than our incredible adult advisor — Thomas Ostberg!

Though Thomas graduated from Darien High School a few years ago, his inspiring presence at Post 53 remains as strong as ever.

During his time at Post, Thomas wore many hats: Audio/Visuals Officer, Supplies Officer and President.

*We asked Thomas what his favorite part of Post was: “The opportunity to serve our community as a young adult alongside lifelong friends.”

*How Post shaped his future: “Post teaches life lessons you can’t learn anywhere else at such a young age. The responsibility, both on and off the ambulance, shaped many of my leadership and life skills.”

*Thomas’ go-to shift snack? Entenmann’s Glazed Munchkins

*His advice for future Posties:

1.) Ground yourself in the mission and appreciate the weight of what you’re doing.

2.) Stay committed and show respect + compassion to your fellow Posties.

3.) Seek feedback and support — grow both on and off the ambulance.

👐🌍 It’s Global Handwashing Day! 🌍👐
Let’s come together as a community to celebrate the power of clean hands! 🧼💧
Washing your hands with soap is one of the easiest ways to stay healthy and stop the spread of germs — at home, school, work, or anywhere.
Follow these steps:
1️⃣ Wet your hands with clean, running water.
2️⃣ Lather with soap — don’t forget between fingers, under nails, and the backs of your hands.
3️⃣ Scrub for at least 20 seconds (sing “Happy Birthday” twice!).
4️⃣ Rinse thoroughly.
5️⃣ Dry with a clean towel or air dry.
