Jim Newsom
In Loving Memory of Jimmy (Jim) Howard Newsom November 22, 1936 - November 24, 2025
Jimmy Howard Newsom, a devoted educator, community leader, and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 24, 2025, at McLeod Hospice in Florence, SC, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion, and enduring love.
Born in Denton, North Carolina, to Adam Clark and Annie Glee Newsom on November 22, 1936, Jim's family later moved to Thomasville, NC, where he spent most of his childhood and teenage years. His life was rooted in faith, family, and a deep commitment to education. He met the love of his life, Marian Gardner Newsom, while attending Wingate College, where he was a standout student-athlete in both baseball and basketball. After earning his associate's degree, he continued his academic journey at Appalachian State University, receiving a bachelor's degree in education, and later earned graduate degrees from East Tennessee State University as well as the University of South Carolina.
Jim and Marian settled in Lamar, South Carolina, where he began a remarkable career in education that spanned nearly five decades. He served as a teacher, coach, principal, and ultimately as superintendent of Darlington County Schools. His leadership and dedication touched countless lives, forging lasting relationships across generations. Over the course of his career, Jim was honored with numerous awards and recognition, including being named Citizen of the Year by the Darlington County Chamber of Commerce, receiving their Lifetime Achievement Award, and earning the Outstanding Service Award from The Byrnes Schools. His service was further recognized by the South Carolina House of Representatives upon his retirement, as well as by the Governor's Office for his contributions to the Darlington County Development Board. In addition, his decades of civic involvement were celebrated by Civitan International, where he received the Superior Recruitment Award and was honored for 50 Years of Dedicated Service. The Jimmy Newsom Signature Award is given annually to an organization or individual that positively impacts the students, teachers, and schools of the Darlington County School District. These accolades reflected not only his professional excellence but also the profound impact he had on students, colleagues, and the broader community.
A faithful member of Lamar United Methodist Church for 63 years, Jim served as a Sunday School teacher and was a steadfast supporter of church activities, including being the current Lay Leader. His commitment to service extended beyond the classroom and sanctuary-he was actively involved in the Civitan Club, served as Chairman of the Egg Scramble Jamboree, and many other civic causes that enriched the lives of those around him.
Above all, Jim cherished his family. He found his greatest joy in time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whose lives were brightened by the wisdom, warmth, and unwavering love of their "Pops". He is survived by his two daughters, Robin (Phil) Tucker of Greenville, SC, and Denise (Rick) Turner of North Myrtle Beach, SC; four grandchildren, Brooks (Jenny) Tucker of Charlotte, Grant (Amanda) Tucker of Charleston, Andrew (Jenna) Turner of Charleston, and Landon (Campbell) Cornelson of Charleston; and five great-grandchildren: George Tucker, Annie Tucker, Holden Tucker, Ward Tucker, and Jack Turner.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Marian Gardner Newsom, who passed away in 2007.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, November 30, 2025, at Lamar United Methodist Church in Lamar, SC. The family will receive visitors at the graveside following the burial.
