Dave founded Cullen Electrical Service in the early 1990s and worked as an electrician his entire life, a career he took great pride in. He was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others.

He loved being outdoors—whether taking his Boston Whaler out on the Mississippi with family and friends, enjoying a bonfire, or watching wildlife. He also loved showing up for his grandsons, cheering them on from the sidelines at games of all kinds. Time spent in Colorado held a special place in his heart.

Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Sarah Cullen of Bettendorf; his son, Patrick (Morgan) Cullen of LeClaire; his grandsons, Blake and Tyler; and his brother, Dan (Sue) Cullen of Wickenburg, Arizona.

Coach Ray Swetalla

After a 15 year battle with cancer, Coach Raymond Charles Swetalla, 74, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois.

Coach Ray was born on July 5, 1951, in Waupaca, Wisconsin, the son of William “Bill” Anton Swetalla and Doris (Jensen) Swetalla. He spent his childhood & adolescence on the family farm, helping with the animals and land. Coach Ray graduated in 1969 from Amherst High School, Amherst, Wisconsin, where he excelled at baseball, football and of course, basketball. He went on to University of Wisconsin-River Falls, in River Falls, Wisconsin, graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology. Coach Ray played basketball for all four years and baseball for one year.

Coach Ray graduated from the University of Indiana, Bloomington, Indiana, in 1979, with a Master’s Degree in Teaching and Physical Education. He was the basketball graduate assistant for Coach Bobby Knight, who became one of the most influential mentors in his life.

He met Emily (Graves) Rubley in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1979 and they married August 26, 1983. They had three wonderful children, Brittain (Swetalla) Harts, Nate Swetalla, and Dain Swetalla. After a few years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the family settled in Davenport, Iowa, in 1988.

You can’t mention Coach Ray without mentioning basketball. His coaching career spanned nearly 50 years with positions at Cornell University, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, Teikyo Marycrest, Davenport Central High School, Lamar High School, Augustana College, Assumption High School, Rockridge High School and coaching his three kids at John F. Kennedy grade school. Among those stops he got the chance to coach his sons Nate and Dain at Davenport Central and Augustana College.

Coach Ray was the head coach at Teikyo Marycrest from 1988 through 1996. He moved to Davenport Central High School in 1997, where he coached his two sons, Nate and Dain. Coach Ray went back to coaching college basketball as the assistant coach at Augustana College from 2004-07, where he got the chance to coach Nate and Dain again.

Even when he wasn’t coaching, Coach Ray was on a basketball court. In his spare time, he trained kids on the fundamentals of the game, and if there was a practice within driving distance, Coach Ray was there. Often giving the head coach an earful on how to improve their defensive system.

Coach Ray co-founded the Iowa-Illinois Senior All-Star Games, a major event for high school athletes and known as the “last hurrah" for top seniors in the Quad Cities.

While at Davenport Central High School Coach Ray was also a physical education teacher from 1997-2014. He taught thousands of students over the years and is best known for developing the Bigger, Faster, Stronger program which taught students the importance of physical training.

In his later years, Coach Ray spent much of his time in Chicago being a grandpa to Caleb, Cade and Avi. He was known as “Ray Ray”, and could be found almost every weekend at their activities, cheering them on. He coached his final basketball team in 2021 as an assistant coach to his daughter Brittain.

Remaining to cherish Coach Ray’s memory are his children, Brittain (Jon) Harts, Chicago, Illinois; Nate Swetalla (Athena Welbourne Swetalla), Valparaiso, Indiana; Dain Swetalla, Melbourne, Australia. Brothers, John (Laurie) Swetalla, Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Paul (Jane Andrews) Swetalla, Verona, Wisconsin. Grandchildren, Caleb Harts, Cade Harts, and Avi Swetalla.

Preceding Coach Ray in death are his father, William Anton Swetalla (1993), mother, Doris (Jensen) Swetalla (2001); infant brother George Swetalla (1949).

Coach Ray lived a life in pursuit of passion for the game of basketball but often used the game as a medium to teach, mentor and strengthen communities. For all who love and were loved by him, there is no way to express the impact he made on their lives or the legacy of love he is leaving behind.

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Coach Ray will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 2, 2026, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will take place at a later date at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Lanark, Wisconsin. Visitation will be held from 3 until 5 p.m., with moments of reflection until 6 p.m., on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. Juanita A. McCormick

Juanita Anne McCormick, age 99, passed away peacefully in Springfield, Missouri, on Thursday, December 18, 2025, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of love, and unwavering devotion to family. A beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was a woman whose kindness, elegance, grace and warmth touched all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A Mass and celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Saint John Vianney Catholic Church, 4097-18th Street, Bettendorf, Iowa. The Mass will be livestreamed by clicking the following link: St. John Vianney YouTube. Visitation with the family will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the gathering space at the church. Interment will be at a later date in Litchfield, Connecticut. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

She was born February 19, 1926, at home on Elliot Avenue in Yonkers, New York, to Phillip J. O’Brien and Juanita McGowan, the third of five children. There she grew up and met, as a teen, the love of her life, Cliff McCormick. Born with a natural sense of style and poise, Juanita spent her early years in private Catholic education and later attended St. Elizabeth’s in New Jersey and Barmore College in New York City where she studied Art History. As a young woman she worked at Lord & Taylor’s, where her keen eye for clothing and timeless style flourished. In midlife she earned her Ohio real estate license and after moving to California subsequently returned to retail, working for years in the designer wear department at Robinsons and Nordstrom’s in Southern California.

Juanita and Cliff were married on October 9, 1948. At the heart of her life was her marriage. She loved her husband fiercely and faithfully, and together they built a life marked by devotion, laughter, and adventure. Cliff’s work took them and their growing family from New York City to Kansas City, to Philadelphia, to Cleveland, to Irvine, to the Mission Hills community in Rancho Mirage, California. At 90, they decided to downsize and move to The Fountains, a retirement community close to their eldest daughter, Chris, in Bettendorf, Iowa. Their shared love of travel took them around the world, creating memories that became treasured stories passed down through generations. They visited all fifty states, Canada, the Caribbean, Ireland—to search their family roots—Europe, South Africa, China, South America, Egypt, and the Holy Land. As Catholics and devotees of the Blessed Virgin, Cliff and Juanita made memorable pilgrimages to the famous shrines of Medjugorje, Lourdes, and Guadalupe.

Above all, Juanita was a devoted mother to her seven children, supporting each one wholeheartedly in their interests, passions, and pursuits. Her encouragement was steadfast, her pride sincere, and her love unconditional. She extended that same love to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, delighting in each new generation and embracing them with joy.

What set Juanita apart was her ability to make people feel truly accepted and loved. Everyone who entered her sphere felt welcomed, seen, and valued. Her home—and her heart—were always open. She listened without judgment, loved without condition, and gave generously of herself.

She will be remembered as a kind, and deeply loving woman of faith, class, and quiet strength. Her life was a beautiful example of how elegance and compassion can walk hand in hand.

She is survived by her seven children: Chris (Hugh Pries)of Bettendorf, Iowa; Brian (Lynn Wittenbrink) of Litchfield, Connecticut; Sean (Diane Adams)of Gunnison, Colorado; Pat (Patrick Gartland) of Springfield, Missouri; Katy (Claude Baillargeon) of Toronto, Ontario; Mick (Donna Kellick) of Minneapolis/Palm Springs; Matt (Gayle Newborn)of Worton, Maryland; their fifteen grandchildren: Jake and Jeff Pries; Leah Howard, Nicole Fowler, Kate McCormick, Charlie McCormick, Lauren Hefferon, and Emily Ryan; Nick McCormick and Becca Smith; Matt Gartland; Mage and Maxine McCormick; and Ben and Molly McCormick; and their twenty-three great-grandchildren: Asher, Adie, Celia, Augustine, Maddie, Suzy, Jerome, Dominic, Bibi, Nolan, Quinn, Mac, Jayden, Charlotte, Noah, Abby, Luke, Peyton, Grayson, Jackson, Davis, Layla and Aubrey, sister Thérése Mahoney, sister- in-law Elizabeth O’Brien, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Juanita was predeceased by her husband, Cliff, her daughter-in-law, JoAnne Barber McCormick, and grandson, Christopher Gartland. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

Ronald Dean Brooks

Ron Brooks, 79, of Davenport, passed away Monday, December 15, 2025, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

The family will greet friends 11:00 am – 1:00 pm on Monday, December 22, 2025 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. A memorial service will directly follow at 1:00 pm with military honors.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marines Toys for Tots Foundation or the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan.

Ron was born on July 15, 1946, in Dubuque, Iowa, a son of Robert and Eunice (Kartman) Brooks. He attended Dubuque Senior High School, enlisting in the Marines in 1963 and served until 1967. Ron is a Vietnam Veteran. The stars aligned on his birthday in 1970 in East Dubuque, where he met Judi (Splinter). They were married on July 10, 1971, in Dubuque. Judi was the love of his life; they built a family and made many beautiful memories in their Davenport home for over 54 years. Before retiring, Ron was a construction inspector with the City of Davenport for over 28 years.

Ron thoroughly enjoyed being a “Girl Dad.” He coached his daughters in softball, taught them how to fish and camp, and that a burp was a compliment to the chef. As a member of the Garfield Elementary Dad’s Club, he initiated the building of the backstops on the softball fields at Garfield Park. After retirement, Ron and Judi hopped into their RV and traveled to various destinations across the United States. His favorite adventure being their opal mining trips to the Royal Peacock Mine in Virgin Valley, Nevada. They ended up trading their RV for a park home in Adelaide Shores in Avon Park, Florida, where Ron was active in the Wood Carvers and Burners Club. Back home in Iowa during the warmer months, you would find Ron putzing around his backyard, tending to his birds and squirrels.

On any given day you could find Ron watching his favorite game shows: Let’s Make a Deal, Jeopardy and The Price is Right. Throughout the years, he loved to fire up a pot of his famous chili or jambalaya to share with family and friends at band parent events, Bix tailgating, and numerous open house parties he and Judi would host at their home.

Above all else, Ron loved being “Poppy” to his two grandchildren. He adored them and loved their adventures to the Bettendorf Children’s Museum or for a ride in his Jeep with the top down for a chili dog or ice cream cone. Nothing made him happier than to have his home filled with their laughter and joyful noise.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Heartland Hospice for the superior care and compassion that was provided to Ron and the support they provided the family.
