Ronald Dean Brooks

Ron Brooks, 79, of Davenport, passed away Monday, December 15, 2025, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

The family will greet friends 11:00 am – 1:00 pm on Monday, December 22, 2025 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. A memorial service will directly follow at 1:00 pm with military honors.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marines Toys for Tots Foundation or the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan.

Ron was born on July 15, 1946, in Dubuque, Iowa, a son of Robert and Eunice (Kartman) Brooks. He attended Dubuque Senior High School, enlisting in the Marines in 1963 and served until 1967. Ron is a Vietnam Veteran. The stars aligned on his birthday in 1970 in East Dubuque, where he met Judi (Splinter). They were married on July 10, 1971, in Dubuque. Judi was the love of his life; they built a family and made many beautiful memories in their Davenport home for over 54 years. Before retiring, Ron was a construction inspector with the City of Davenport for over 28 years.

Ron thoroughly enjoyed being a “Girl Dad.” He coached his daughters in softball, taught them how to fish and camp, and that a burp was a compliment to the chef. As a member of the Garfield Elementary Dad’s Club, he initiated the building of the backstops on the softball fields at Garfield Park. After retirement, Ron and Judi hopped into their RV and traveled to various destinations across the United States. His favorite adventure being their opal mining trips to the Royal Peacock Mine in Virgin Valley, Nevada. They ended up trading their RV for a park home in Adelaide Shores in Avon Park, Florida, where Ron was active in the Wood Carvers and Burners Club. Back home in Iowa during the warmer months, you would find Ron putzing around his backyard, tending to his birds and squirrels.

On any given day you could find Ron watching his favorite game shows: Let’s Make a Deal, Jeopardy and The Price is Right. Throughout the years, he loved to fire up a pot of his famous chili or jambalaya to share with family and friends at band parent events, Bix tailgating, and numerous open house parties he and Judi would host at their home.

Above all else, Ron loved being “Poppy” to his two grandchildren. He adored them and loved their adventures to the Bettendorf Children’s Museum or for a ride in his Jeep with the top down for a chili dog or ice cream cone. Nothing made him happier than to have his home filled with their laughter and joyful noise.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Heartland Hospice for the superior care and compassion that was provided to Ron and the support they provided the family.

Those left to honor his memory include his Wife, Judi; daughters, Ali (Dustin) Weber, Erin (Kenny Foust) Croll; grandchildren, Eliza Croll and Cameron Weber; siblings, Barbara Eveland, and Tom (Molly) Brooks, brothers-in-law, John (Polly) Splinter, and Joe (Debbie) Splinter, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Mark Brooks, and sister, Donna Jacobsmeir.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures;

He leads me beside quiet waters.

He restores my soul

He guides me in the paths of righteousness

For His name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me;

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

You have anointed my head with oil;

My cup overflows.

Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Raymond R. Boeding

Raymond R. Boeding, who entered eternal life on December 10, 2025, was born on a hot August day on the prairie in Glad Valley, South Dakota, where his family had homesteaded in 1905 after emigrating from Germany. Raised among his six brothers and six sisters, Ray learned early the values of faith, family, and perseverance. He attended a one-room schoolhouse until fourth grade, when years of sandstorms, insect infestations, and failed crops forced the family from their farm. Through every hardship, Ray often spoke of how his mother’s steadfast faith guided the family forward.

In 1939, the family returned to West Point, Iowa, where Ray completed his education at St. Mary’s High School. After graduation, he worked at the Shafer Pen Company before being called to serve in the U.S. Army in 1950. He completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, and served in the combat infantry during the Korean War. Ray carried a quiet sense of duty throughout his life, rooted in gratitude to God for bringing him safely home.

Following his military service, Ray attended the University of Iowa, earning a degree in accounting in 1956. During his college years, God’s providence brought him together with Joan Fitzgerald, the great love of his life. They were married on December 26, 1953, joining their lives in a sacrament that remained a source of joy, strength, and grace for nearly sixty years.

Ray worked for the Department of the Army at the Army Munitions and Chemical Command (AMCOM) as a financial analyst, retiring as a project manager. He and Joan raised their four children in Davenport before moving to rural Donahue, where Joan served as a school nurse in the North Scott schools. Their home was filled with faith, laughter, and a deep commitment to one another. Family vacations—to Green Lake, Wisconsin; to the South Dakota homestead; to Nebraska to visit relatives; and later to Sunrise Beach at the Lake of the Ozarks—became cherished times of togetherness and gratitude.

Outside of work and family life, Ray enjoyed the gifts of God’s creation through his many hobbies. He took great joy in gardening, tending to his plants with patience and care. He also found creativity in making wine and beer, sharing his homemade batches with friends and family. These activities brought him peace, purpose, and moments of simple delight.

Ray was deeply committed to his faith community. For many years he volunteered at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Long Grove, Iowa, offering his time and talents to support parish events, building projects, and the daily needs of the church he loved. His quiet service was a reflection of his humble spirit and deep devotion.

Ray is survived by three of his children: Mike and his family of Houston, Texas; Donald and his family of San Francisco, California; and JoEllen of Eldridge, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Susan in 2022, whom he entrusted to God’s eternal care. Ray is also blessed with seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren —each one a reminder of God’s continued blessings on the family he and Joan built together.

After Joan’s passing in 2013, Ray continued living in their country home until moving to Grand Haven retirement home in August 2024. He remained a man of deep faith, prayer, and gratitude throughout his life. Ray approached each day with humility, kindness, and a strong trust in God’s plan.

Raymond R. Boeding now rests in the loving embrace of his Savior, reunited with Joan and Susan, and held in the eternal peace promised by Christ. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, and his legacy of faith, devotion, and quiet strength will live on through his family.

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Ray will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 20, 2025 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Long Grove, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Long Grove. Visitation will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2025 at St. Ann’s with additional visitation on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass begins. In lieu of flowers, please direct any donations to St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Son Huu Thai

Son Huu Thai, 52, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, surrounded by the family he cherished so deeply.

Born on December 18, 1972, in An Giang, Vietnam, Son was the son of Choi Thien Thai and Mot Thi Ho. He grew up understanding the value of hard work and the importance of family. On June 26, 1993, he married the love of his life, Lan Thi Nguyen. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and resilience as they journeyed from Vietnam to Davenport to start a new chapter.

Son devoted his working years to the electronics field, a career that perfectly matched his fascination with technology. He was known for his remarkable skill and reliability. His boss often affectionately called him “the technician god” because he could fix anything he touched.

Though he took pride in his work, Son’s joy lived in life’s simple pleasures. He loved fishing, grilling meat for family gatherings, and singing karaoke with heart and soul. He especially cherished his date nights with Lan, often enjoying long meals together at buffet restaurants. Above all, he was a proud father and a doting grandfather who treasured every moment with his grandchildren.

Before his passing, Son wrote a final message to his friends and family to offer comfort and love one last time. His words are preserved here exactly as he wrote them:

“Thank you to everyone who supported me throughout our time on this awesome planet. I’m heading to a better place now, and I wish you all a happy and prosperous future. Today, I go to meet our Great God and be reunited with my family. Do not cry for me; instead, be happy knowing that I am in His presence.

To my beautiful and loving wife, thank you for being by my side through all the ups and downs. You will always be in my heart, soul, and mind, and I will always cherish our time together. Your cooking is out of this world—it even beats my mom’s! You have to stay strong, just like you were the day we met. I will always be by your side. You better remember to take care of yourself and eat, or I’ll be mad! We will meet again in the next life to be together through the end of time.

To my loving sons, thank you for everything. I’m very proud of what you are doing. I am a man of few words, but I deeply appreciate how hard you fight to defend our country. Stay strong, and know that I’ll be watching you from above. P.S. Sing some karaoke for me!

To my lovely daughters-in-law, thank you for putting up with my sons. They are a handful—trust me, I know. You keep them in line every day, and that is hard work. I entrust them to your care and love.

To my grandchildren, I love you. You made every moment of my life special. From your first words to the 'Grandpa' moments, you make my heart full. Be the best you can be, and do the best you can do. I’ll be watching over you. And make sure you get good grades!

Please don’t think of this as a farewell, but as a new beginning. To all my friends and family: I love you all, and thank you for your support.”

Those left to honor his memory include his devoted wife of 31 years, Lan Thi Nguyen, his sons, Tan Buu Thai of Monterey, California, and Tien Trung Thai of Ankeny, Iowa, his daughters-in-law, Thu Pham and Phuong Huynh, and his beloved grandchildren, Alyssa Thai and Emma Thai. Tien and Phuong are expecting a baby, and although Son did not get the chance to meet this grandchild, he shared his hope that the baby would grow up healthy, joyful, and surrounded by love.

He leaves behind a family that will carry his stories, his humor, and his steady presence forward for generations to come.
