When Irene Karedis Borys and her husband moved to the Quad Cities in 2021, life with two toddlers felt typical for their family. Like many parents, they assumed the challenges they faced were simply part of early childhood. But in December 2023, they sensed something more was going on.

Their son James was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 2 ā€” just eight months before kindergarten. Instead of despair, the diagnosis brought clarity and a path forward.

By February 2024, James began speech and occupational therapy at MercyOne Genesis Bettendorf Pediatric Therapy. With support from his care team ā€” including speech therapist Jen Berger and occupational therapist Lauren Frank ā€” sessions were designed to meet James where he was, helping him build communication, flexibility and coping skills. Within months, his behavior improved, and daily routines became easier for the entire family.

Around the same time, the family learned their daughter Ellie also needed support. After an ADHD diagnosis, she began occupational therapy at MercyOne, where she worked on strategies to support regulation and social engagement.

By August 2024, James met his developmental goals and was discharged from therapy. That fall, he started kindergarten alongside his peers. Within weeks, he met his communication goals and increased his classroom participation.
