Great quick guide for what's expected! These are guidelines, but they can be very helpful when deciding if your child might benefit from an evaluation or not!

To parents of children with already identified communication delays- feel free to scroll past this post, you’ve already identified your child benefits from support and these numbers are not relevant - your child’s progress is ❤️

To parents considering a speech and language evaluation: It can be really difficult for parents to know when to get a speech and language evaluation - especially when they are constantly bombarded with various information and it’s difficult to know what to believe or what is best for your child.

It also gets tricky because there is a HUGE range of average communication development, and communication skills are way more and way broader than I could include in a “quick” guide. As a result, I always recommend to get an evaluation if you - or anyone else - thinks one is needed. Often that means trusting your gut as a parent, but I think it’s equally important to trust if someone else thinks it’s necessary too.

The truth is: some kids qualify and demonstrate a need for intervention and some don’t- you won’t know unless you see a speech pathologist! AND just because a child does not qualify at one time in their life, does not mean they will not at a later time.

And last: there’s NO SHAME in getting your child needed support. The stigma around getting therapy for kids has GOT TO GO!

Such a great simple explanation of the differences between Speech and Language, and an explanation of the many areas we target in Speech Therapy! Note: Many kids have difficulties with BOTH Speech and Language and we often work on them at the same time!

We often talk about kids who are later to begin speaking as “speech delayed” but did you know that usually, it’s not a speech delay- it’s actually a language delay. That’s because speech and language are two very different things!

This is very oversimplified, but here are some common speech delays and disorders: articulation, phonology, apraxia, & stuttering. Some common language based delays and disorders are: expressive language, receptive language, pragmatic language (this is how a lot of autistic kids qualify for speech support), and even some learning disorders like dyslexia are language based.

You can have great speech skills and have difficult with language (a child who can repeat everything and needs support generating their own comments) or have good language skills and have difficulty with speech (a person who communicates with sign language or AAC) - and a person can also have difficulty in both areas.

Did you know that using phonological or sound patterns are common for young children to use? It’s true! Adventures in Speech Pathology has some amazing handouts - and this one is helpful for parents to know when these patterns are typical and when a child may benefit from a speech therapy evaluation.
