What does "trauma-informed" therapy mean?

Trauma-informed therapy means a lot of things, but here are a few.
- The trauma you experienced is valid and important, even if you think it wasn't "that bad."
- An understanding that trauma impacts the nervous system and healing includes reestablishing an awareness of your body.
- Your feeling of emotional safety is the top priority.
- You will never be pressured to do or discuss anything you don't want to.
- The skills you developed in a traumatic situation were necessary to survive or maintain attachment. Trauma-informed therapy helps your mind and body leave survival mode, learn new skills, and believe healthier things about yourself and others.

Trauma can be a very difficult and painful experience, and for many people, it can have long-lasting effects on their mental and emotional wellbeing.

Unfortunately, many people who have experienced trauma are often met with disbelief or invalidation, which can exacerbate their pain and make it more difficult for them to heal.

You probably are familiar with “fight or flight” feeling when your sympathetic nervous system is activated. But not everyone goes into “fight or flight” at the sense of danger. Some people fawn, people pleasing or catering to the threat to stay safe. Others freeze, a way of shutting down to avoid or ignore what is happening, usually out of a sense of powerlessness. Some of us are ready to fight to defend ourselves at the first scent of attack. And others feel their body scream, “Get me out of here!” when something feels unsafe. 🙋‍♀️ Everyone has a primary tendency in this area. What’s yours?

Part of your amygdala’s job is to keep you safe, and it NEVER forgets when something hurts you. It works on an unconscious level to detect threats and tells you when to respond by sending signals to the rest of your body to react (your flight or flight system).
Once something or someone has hurt you, your amygdala is wired to sense DANGER whenever something reminds it of that hurt.
From an evolutionary standpoint, this is a good thing. Once you learn what a tiger is, you never have to learn again.

Let's talk about the alarm system in your body. We all have one. But if you have an anxiety disorder, you can feel like yours is ultra-sensitive or faulty.
It's like having a fire alarm that goes off every time you cook. You might be trying to do everyday things, and your alarm system is going off. It can feel so loud that it's difficult to think or do anything.

Be open to the idea that your alarm system isn't faulty.
It's doing its job really well. It wants to keep you safe. You are not broken. ❤️

I'll write more about why your alarm system might be ultra-sensitive in my next post. ✨

Whether you have OCD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, or any unspecified anxiety impacting your daily life - you are dealing with two main things:

1) The physical sensations of anxiety and nervous system dysregulation - which, simply put, sucks. 📌

2) Feeling uncomfortable with uncertainty. 📌

No matter the label, the more you can get comfortable with uncertainty and allow uncomfortable feelings to exist, the less anxiety you will have.

When you have an anxious thought, try not to reassure yourself. Try saying “Maybe, maybe not” to yourself. The point is to increase your tolerance of uncertainty. 💚

The more you try to avoid anxiety, the more anxious you'll feel.

Acceptance is the name of the game when it comes to anxiety treatment. Avoiding situations that increase your anxiety is the worst thing you can do for your recovery. Have you ever heard the phrase, "What you resist persists?' It's true.
Trying not to think about something or trying to avoid anxiety-provoking situations - will only make your fear increase. I know it’s easier said than done, but facing your fears is the only way forward.

If you’re struggling, know that you’re never alone here. I see you. You deserve to be supported through this journey. 💕

Everyone feels nervous from time to time. It's human to worry about situations out of our control. When we talk about anxiety, however, we aren't talking about normal worry or feeling nervous on occasion. If you live with chronic anxiety, you may experience a sense of dread for everyday things. You might live in fear of your next panic or anxiety attack. Perhaps you become afraid of the intense physical sensations, or you can’t fall asleep because your body is on high alert.

Anxiety treatment does not mean you'll never feel nervous or worry about the future again. It doesn’t mean that you'll never feel fear. But you can stop anxiety from controlling your life and impacting your decisions. You can learn what anxiety is and how to tolerate it. You can strengthen the connection between your mind and body, helping you send safety signals to your nervous system.

People often interchange the terms panic attack and anxiety attack, but they aren't the same. Both can cause rapid heart rate and shallow breathing. If you've experienced either - you know how horrible it can feel. However, the key differences are the intensity and duration of the symptoms. Panic attacks are more intense but shorter than attacks caused by an ongoing anxiety disorder. Also, specific stimuli (like heights or driving, for example) or certain situations can lead to panic attacks. Anxiety attacks are more persistent and may not have a particular concern to tie them back to. They can feel like they come on out of nowhere. Both are treatable with the right approach and do not need to prevent you from living a full life. If you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of either condition, help from a mental health counselor can help you recover and improve your overall well-being.

Self-care can be a challenge when you're struggling with anxiety. You may feel guilty for prioritizing yourself or be overwhelmed and not even know where to begin. Start small; try going to bed a little earlier or leaving your phone out of your bedroom. Building a routine to support your mental health takes time, but it is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Don't give up on finding what works for you. ❤️
