More than 11% of African American citizens in the United States do not have medical insurance coverage. About 17% of African Americans in the United States have reported struggling with mental illnesses (more than 7 million people). Historical adversity has perpetuated struggles such has poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, incarceration- all of which are linked to mental illnesses. EVERYONE deserves access to mental health treatment. Purchasing a shirt will help cover the costs for generational-trauma-informed therapy for people residing in urban communities. And here is our second newest therapist, Crystal, LCMHC-A! We are grateful to have her in our community to help adolescents and women in need of a space to heal, grow, and thrive! As a former school counselor, she is well trained in working with adolescents and their families find success amidst their challenges. We have taken a step back from social media to better reflect on the voices of our melanated community members- we've written a blog post to inform the community of how we are reflecting and responding as therapists. One main aspect we have taken away from this time of listening is that some people of color desire for their therapists to have a similar cultural and racial background. This is a basic request that we understand and believe should be accessible in order to reach the mental health needs of the black community. We have compiled a list of resources for people of color to find therapists from directories specifically curated for them. We will continue to provide therapy for everyone, no matter a person's color, but hope that these resources can break down some of the barriers that have kept people from receiving the mental health services they need.
