Premedicine and Allied Health Professions Program

Premedicine and Allied Health Professions Program The Premedicine and Allied Health Professions program emphasizes allopathic medicine (M.D.), though

Davidson has a rich tradition in the preprofessional training of medical health professionals, and its students are, and continue to become, leaders in the medical and dental profession. The liberal arts education you receive here prepares you, as a future health services provider, to meet the challenges and shoulder the responsibilities that await you. The Premedicine and Allied Health Professions program emphasizes allopathic medicine (M.D.), though the program director and advisers can provide information and resources related to other health professions, including osteopathic medicine, podiatric medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy, optometry, physical therapy, physician's assistant, public health, nursing, etc. First-year and sophomore students should attend the fall semester Premedicine and Allied Health Professions director's meeting; and then meet individually with the program director, early in your college career to discuss a plan of study.

We are pleased to announce the launch of Davidson’s new Department of Public Health!

Whatever path their lives take, Davidson students will be affected by complex public health challenges that require critical thinking, consideration of values, and the ability to communicate effectively. As pre-health professions students, public health provides additional perspectives, knowledge, and skills that will serve you throughout your career. Whether it's a guest lecture, a conversation with a faculty member, an internship, a course, or by completing the new public health minor, the department will provide students a range of opportunities to explore the many facets of interdisciplinary public health. Departments across Davidson have contributed to the curriculum, resulting in an innovative approach to undergraduate public health education grounded in the liberal arts. The department will have special focus on structural inequalities, the biological, ethical, social, political, and psychological dimensions of health, and making connections with local, regional, national, and global public health organizations.

Over the coming months and years, the Davidson Department of Public Health (https://www.davidson.edu/academic-departments/public-health) will be offering many exciting opportunities to learn and participate. As Fall 2021 registration opens, we want to let you know about the prefix for department courses (PBH) and call your attention to the new public health minor. We invite you to get in touch with department faculty at public_health@davidson.edu to learn more about the new minor or for any other questions you have about public health at Davidson.

First X-rays

On the evening of January 12, 1896, three Davidson College juniors bribed a janitor and sneaked into a physics laboratory, carrying with them a cadaver's finger and other strange items. They didn't realize that they were about to make history.

Premedical/Prehealth Advisory Committee (PAC) Information Session (9/30) @ 7:00 pm EST. If you have already attended a PAC Information Session and have questions, please feel free to join us for this session. RSVP ammacintyre@davidson.edu.

As a premedical/prehealth student you may apply for an evaluation by our Premedical/Prehealth Advisory Committee (PAC). The PAC assesses each student's preparedness to apply to medical/health professions school(s) with respect to their demonstrated academic performance, commitment to medicine and health, and the development of humane instincts and core personal competencies. You will find the comprehensive evaluation that the PAC provides to be extremely helpful in preparing your medical/health professional school(s) application materials for the next application cycles beginning in summer 2021 or 2022. The PAC evaluation process is designed to also help you identify parts of your application that may be weak. In addition, the PAC evaluation results in a PAC rating which forms the basis of the composite letter that will be sent to health professions schools in support of your application. Admissions at health professions schools greatly value such composite letters. Rising juniors, seniors, and recent alumni, interested in medical, dental, physician assistant, nursing, veterinary, and physical therapy programs, should participate in the Premedical/Prehealth Advisory Committee (PAC) evaluation process. We recommend that you request PAC evaluation during your junior or senior year, or within three years of graduation.

After attending the session, you will receive the PAC application and instructions by email. The PAC evaluation cycle (2020-2021) begins in the fall semester with application materials due by 11:59 pm EST on November 1st.
