"If I avoid spending time with inauthentic people am I selfish?"

There was a conversation happening on a friends social media recently about spending time with authentic people, and I want to offer a perspective that goes deeper than the usual conversation around judgment.

For me, it isn’t judgment. It’s discernment.
I think of authenticity with people the same way I think about food.

Would you willingly eat fake food every day? What would happen to your body if you lived on plastic apples from the toy aisle? You can hold them, you can admire them, but you can’t nourish yourself with them.

People are the same.

Does the plastic apple know it's plastic?

Probably.

But maybe it believes plastic is as real as anything else.

Or maybe it believe that everyone is really plastic too.

Either way we can't eat plastic without causing harm.
Authenticity is realness.

It’s someone knowing themselves well enough to say, “This is who I am,” without costume or performance. It’s someone who has done the inner work to recognize their own patterns, shadows, and desires, and is willing to show up from that place.
But not everyone is comfortable being themselves. Not everyone knows how to know themself this way.
Some people don’t know who they are beneath the mask. Some are aware they’re performing. Some are so used to being “plastic” that they don’t even feel the disconnect anymore. Plastic is real for them. I am personally okay with people like this. There is not intention of deception.

It's the ones who know they are plastic who are pretending to be something else.

Reviewing your connections
I recorded this during Covid, but the perspective & lesson hold true to this topic.
And here’s the part we don’t talk about enough:
What happens to you when you spend too much time with someone who isn’t being themselves? Someone who shapeshifts from apple to grape to banana in order to either fit in or to manipulate for personal gain.

It is human nature to match the fruit bowl. SO when we are with inauthentic people, we can have the tendency to shapeshift too. OR we feel terribly uncomfortable with the urge to flee.

Most people don’t realize how quickly they can start masking, too. You adjust your tone. You shrink your truth. You soften your edges. You withhold. You hold back. You pretend, just a little, to make the relationship work. And that pretending is exhausting. It disconnects you from your own center. This is why those who are aware of realness, their realness and that of others.

For me, that’s the most uncomfortable part, when I notice I’m no longer being myself because the environment doesn’t support authenticity.

No one is stuck as plastic. Once someone realizes that they too, may be plastic. Magic, happiness, and they become real. More and more so each day that they or you seek to know yourself and embrace that everyday.

You deserve the best in your closest circle.

There’s a psychological principle called social contagion, which shows that emotions, behaviors, and belief systems spread through groups the same way a scent fills a room. Research from Harvard and UC San Diego found that everything from happiness to habits can ripple through social networks up to three degrees of separation.

Another well‑known idea comes from motivational speaker Jim Rohn, who said:

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

It’s not a scientific law, but proximity shapes reality and therefore identity. Neuroscience backs this up through mirror neurons, which fire not only when we act, but when we observe someone else acting. Our brains literally rehearse the behaviors of the people around us. Over time, we absorb their emotional tone, their coping mechanisms, their worldview, their motivation, and their level of authenticity. So if you spend your days with people who are performing or disconnected from themselves, your nervous system will start to adapt to that environment. Likewise, if you spend your time with people who are grounded, self‑aware, real, etc., your system will rise to meet that level of truth.

Authenticity is contagious.
So is inauthenticity.

Jim Rohn, who said:
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
This is why discernment isn’t judgment—it’s self‑protection. It’s nourishment. It’s choosing real food over plastic fruit.
