Meet Gwen 💛 This sweet Golden Retriever puppy came to us for a preventative procedure called Juvenile P***c Symphysiodesis (JPS), a surgery performed in young dogs to help improve how the hip joint develops.

Because Gwen was identified early, she was a great candidate for this procedure, which can help reduce the risk or severity of hip dysplasia as she grows.

From surgery to recovery and all the way to heading home, Gwen did amazing every step of the way. 🐾

Preventative care and early intervention can make a lifelong difference and Gwen is already on the right path 💛✨

Toto came through our ER after his owner noticed him sniffing around her sewing supplies and wanted to make sure he hadn’t swallowed anything. Out of caution, our doctors performed X-rays and sure enough, we found a needle and thread that needed to be removed.
Toto was placed under anesthesia and our team performed an endoscopy to safely retrieve it. The procedure went smoothly, and he recovered from anesthesia without any issues.

We’re so happy to see Toto doing well! Cases like his are a great example of how our Emergency team works efficiently to diagnose and treat foreign body ingestions, helping pets get the care they need as soon as possible. 🐾💙

Kittens and puppies are among the most medically vulnerable patients we see.

Because their immune systems are still developing and their vaccine series may not be complete, young pets are at higher risk for serious diseases like:

• Parvovirus in puppies
• Panleukopenia (feline parvo) in kittens
• Severe intestinal parasites
• Rapid dehydration from GI illness

These conditions can progress quickly and become life-threatening without prompt treatment.

If your puppy or kitten shows signs like lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or weakness, seek care immediately. Early intervention can be lifesaving.

Kidney disease can progress quietly. Bloodwork and urinalysis play an important role in identifying changes and helping veterinarians evaluate kidney function. On World Kidney Day, we’re highlighting the role of advanced diagnostics and the expertise of our Internal Medicine team.

Pets are often referred to us by their primary care veterinarians, or first seen by one of our ER doctors when they arrive with concerning symptoms. Our Internal Medicine specialists then work closely with referring veterinarians, our ER team, and pet families to diagnose kidney disease, monitor progression, and create individualized treatment plans that support the best possible quality of life.

When your pet is referred to a board-certified specialist, it means they’re receiving care from a veterinarian who has completed years of additional, focused training beyond veterinary school.

Board certification requires:
Advanced internship training
2-3+ year specialty residency
Publication and case requirements
Passing comprehensive board examinations
Ongoing continuing education

Specialists are trained specifically to manage complex, advanced, or challenging medical conditions.

If you ever have questions about what a referral means or how specialty care works, our team is always here to help guide you.

Tito spent seven days in our 24-hour ICU with Board Certified Emergency and Critical Care Specialist Dr. Brooke Newmans and our dedicated team. Each check-in brought reassurance, each treatment gave hope, and today, Tito is thriving, enjoying sunny days and stroller walks with his mom.
“I can’t imagine going through what I went through at any other place. If I hadn’t brought Tito to AVCC, he wouldn’t have made it,” shares his mom, Trixie.

Capillaria is a group of tiny internal parasites that can affect both cats and dogs, most commonly targeting the bladder, lungs, or nasal passages. Pets become infected from the environment, through contaminated soil, urine, stool, or even by eating infected earthworms.
Many cats show no signs, but symptoms can include blood in the urine or straining to urinate (bladder involvement), coughing or wheezing (lung involvement), or sneezing and nasal discharge (nasal involvement). Diagnosis can be tricky since eggs aren’t always shed consistently, which makes a careful microscopic exam so important.

🔬 This image shows Capillaria worms identified under the microscope by our lab technician, a not-so-common finding and a great catch by our team.

The good news: Capillaria is treatable with deworming medication, and most pets recover well with proper care.
