Ive had several people looking for Purebred Highlands with NO horns lately- otherwise known as polled. All purebred Highlands will have horns unless they have physically been removed by someone after birth.

While many people fear handling cattle with large horns and think it is ok to do away with them, they actually serve many puposes and removal is detrimental to the animal.

Scottish Highland cattle are a heritage breed. Bred to survive in the harsh harsh winters in the mountains of Scotland. In the deep snow of the mountains, the winters are long and no food is to be found without foraging. The horns are used to dig in the snow for grasses, dried berries, and whatever else they can find to eat.

Highlands are built for cool, harsh climates- their thick coats are a major advantage in winter but a significant disadvantage in the summer, requiring active management like shade and leaving horns intact is a must to raise Highlands in the U.S.

Scottish Highland cattle use their thick double coat for winter insulation, while their horns and behaviors like seeking shade and panting help them cool down in summer, though they can struggle with extreme heat, relying on evaporative cooling and reduced food intake to manage. They redirect blood flow to their core in the cold, but utilize horn vascularization for heat dissipation in the summers.

Highland horns function as a built in radiator in hot weather. The horns are not solid bone. They are filled with a network of blood vessels that work as a heat exchange known as thermoregulation. When the cow is hot, the blood flows through the horns where heat can be released more easily than from the body core. The cooled blood is then returned to the body to help the cow cool down.

Scottish Highland cows are one of the most docile breed of cattle making them an easy prey for all predators. I personally have seen my mama's fiercely protect their babies using those horns to fling any predator who came near. Without the horns they don't stand a chance against a coyote, bobcat, or mountain lion- not to mention just a simple dog on a mission to kill.

Please, please, please do your homework before you decide Highland cows are the breed for you.

Purebred Scottish Highlands- they aren't just cute. They aren't polled. They are not mini.
