“Acid reflux = too much stomach acid”… right? 👀
Not always.

As a Hashimoto’s dietitian, I see this all the time 👇🏻
Low stomach acid is extremely common—and often treated the wrong way.

Here’s the twist:
You can have acid reflux and still have LOW stomach acid.

🚩 Signs it might be low, not high:
• Bloating or feeling heavy after meals
• Getting full really quickly
• Excess burping after eating
• Undigested food in your stool
• Reflux that’s worse later in the day or after big meals

When stomach acid is too low, food just sits there… fermenting → gas, pressure, and that burning feeling.

✨ What actually helps:
• Slow down when you eat
• Chew your food thoroughly
• Eat in a calm, relaxed state
• Cut back on ultra-processed foods
• Try diluted apple cider vinegar before meals
• Consider HCL support (when appropriate)

This is one of the biggest missing pieces I address inside my 16-week program, The Thyroid Balance Blueprint 🫶🏼

Nobody told me my gut could be the trigger behind my Hashimoto’s 🤯

I spent years chasing symptoms—fatigue, bloating, brain fog, weight gain…
but I wasn’t going deep enough.

Here are 10 things I wish I knew sooner about my gut + Hashimoto’s:

1️⃣ Hashimoto’s isn’t just a thyroid issue—it’s an immune condition, and your gut is a huge piece of it
2️⃣ Chronic stress can disrupt gut signaling long before digestion feels “off”
3️⃣ You can have gut dysfunction without daily bloating or stomach pain
4️⃣ Gut inflammation can show up as fatigue, anxiety, or hormone imbalances
5️⃣ Food sensitivities often develop after gut damage—not before
6️⃣ Your gut directly impacts thyroid hormone conversion
7️⃣ Constipation affects hormone clearance and detox pathways
8️⃣ Antibiotics, infections, and birth control can alter your gut for years
9️⃣ Your gut plays a major role in blood sugar balance and stress tolerance
🔟 Healing doesn’t start with restriction—it starts with understanding your body

This is why I run a GI-MAP with all of my clients.
Symptoms don’t tell the full story—your gut does.

Hashimoto’s isn’t a thyroid issue—it’s an immune system issue.
And if you want real results, you have to address what’s driving that dysfunction!

👇🏼 Here’s where I’d start:

1. Remove key inflammatory triggers (especially gluten + dairy)
Gluten can mimic thyroid tissue, which may trigger the immune system to attack the thyroid.

Focus on:
🥦 Whole, unprocessed foods
🥩 Quality protein (grass-fed, wild-caught)
🥑 Healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts/seeds)
🍠 Gluten-free carbs (if tolerated)

2. Test your gut (don’t guess)
Around 70% of your immune system lives in your gut.

A GI-MAP can uncover:
→ Infections (like H. pylori, Candida, parasites)
→ Gut inflammation + permeability
→ Low beneficial bacteria
→ Digestive issues

👉 Without testing, you’re guessing.

3. Support gut healing
With Hashimoto’s, gut dysfunction is almost always part of the picture.

Start with:
→ Bone broth
→ Aloe vera
→ L-glutamine

4. Get serious about stress
This is the most overlooked piece.

Chronic stress = immune dysregulation + hormone imbalance

Start with:
→ Daily walks / time outside
→ Nervous system support (breathwork, meditation)
→ Sleep (7–9 hours)
→ Less screen time at night

Your body isn’t broken—it’s responding to what it’s dealing with.

My program, the Thyroid Balance Blueprint, includes a GI Map!

If your thyroid labs have ever come back “normal”… but you still feel exhausted, bloated, and stuck—this could be why 👇

Your labs are only as accurate as your preparation—and most people are never told this.

Things that can skew your results before labs:
• Biotin → can falsely lower TSH + raise T3/T4
• Iodine + ashwagandha → can temporarily increase thyroid hormones
• L-tyrosine + B vitamins (with biotin)
• Even selenium, zinc, and iron can have a small impact

And most importantly:
🚫 Taking your thyroid medication before your blood draw

→ This can make your levels look better than they actually are

If you want to make sure your next labs are actually accurate:

If you’re bloated every single day, your body isn’t working against you—it’s trying to get your attention.

Bloating isn’t about eating less.
It’s not about cutting out every food.
And it’s definitely not something you just have to accept with Hashimoto’s.

It can come from things like:
Air swallowing (gum, straws)
Low stomach acid
Blood sugar imbalances
Inflammation
Gut infections

And until you actually address the root cause… it keeps coming back.

That’s exactly why I include a GI-MAP stool test inside my program—so we can stop guessing and actually fix what’s going on.

You deserve to feel comfortable in your body again 🤍

POV: You walk into your thyroid appointment after gaining 30+ pounds while eating under 1,000 calories… you’re constantly freezing, bloated, constipated, and completely drained — and you already know what they’re going to say:

“Your labs are normal.”

But “normal” TSH doesn’t mean:
• Your Free T3 is actually optimal
• Your iron levels are where they should be
• Your cortisol is balanced
• Your gut isn’t inflamed
• Your antibodies aren’t actively attacking

You’re not crazy.
You’re not lazy.
And your body isn’t broken.

If you’re stuck in the “normal labs” cycle, it’s time to look deeper at what’s really driving the weight gain, fatigue, and inflammation — not just what falls within the reference range.

Vitamin D isn’t actually a traditional vitamin—it's acts like a hormone that plays a major role in immune regulation.

In Hashimoto’s, where the immune system attacks the thyroid, vitamin D helps regulate:
• T regulatory (Treg) cells
• Inflammatory cytokines
• B cell activity (antibody production)
• Immune tolerance

Low vitamin D levels have been linked to:
– Higher TPO and Tg antibodies
– Increased thyroid inflammation
– More autoimmune activity
– Worse fatigue and mood symptoms

And here’s the problem:
Many labs list 30 ng/mL as “normal”…

But for those with autoimmunity, that’s often not optimal.

In clinical practice, we typically aim for a serum 25(OH)D level around 60–80 ng/mL (individualized, of course).

If your antibodies aren’t improving…
If you’re still exhausted despite medication…
If inflammation markers remain high…

It may be time to evaluate and optimize your vitamin D levels.

It’s not a magic fix—
But it is a foundational piece of immune health in Hashimoto’s.
