Introducing: THE PELVIC FLOOR. Everyone has one, so we might as well get acquainted with it. The pelvic floor muscles are in charge of:

1️⃣ Bowel/bladder control 🚽
2️⃣ Organ and core support 💪
3️⃣ Sexual function 🛏️😉

There is often embarrassment and shame associated with these topics, but literally EVERYONE has a pelvic floor and performs these bodily functions and experiences (even men!). If the pelvic floor is not working properly, the functions of those muscles do not work properly. The pelvic floor muscles are like any muscles in the body and can get weak, tense, or have coordination challenges. These muscles can be impacted by things like aging, menopause, pregnancy, postpartum, and much more. The good news is that muscles can be retrained - so there is hope! So let's put aside the embarrassment and dive right in. 🤿

The answer to all of these is a loud ‘NO’. Let me say it louder for the folks in the back: 📢 ‘NOOO!’

These are unfortunately common myths that people accept as fact, but these experiences are NOT a normal part of womanhood or motherhood. Don’t let your friend, yourself, or even your doctor tell you otherwise.

If you have every found yourself Googling or wondering these questions, there may be challenges with your pelvic floor. Ask me how I can help!

Sciatic pain – literally a pain in the butt! Tight muscles in the hips, butt, and legs can put pressure on the sciatic nerve. Nerve are often “claustrophobic” and HATE pressure. So where there is extra pressure on the nerve, it lets you know by sending sharp pain, stabbing, shooting pain anywhere from the buttocks to the back of the leg. It can even make it harder to put weight on that leg.

This pregnancy journey ain’t easy… so I got you! Try these three tips:

1. Tennis ball – press ball against wall and hold for about a minute until the tension reduces
2. Foam roller – roll your butt or leg muscle on the roller
3. Hip stretches – this one cut off (🤷🏾‍♀️), but you can stretch your piriformis or hamstring muscle to reduce muscle pressure

Three things that set the stage for pain during pregnancy:

1. Hormonal changes. This is often even more impactful if you have had multiple pregnancies, back to back pregnancies, or had longer periods of breastfeeding. Relaxin is a "frenemy".... needed to help prepare for delivery, but when it allows extra movement in the loosened the joints - OUCHY!
2. Postural changes. A pregnant body changes every week! Your muscles and skeleton are working overtime to keep up 😓. Those changes cause increased pressure and stress where there usually isn't. Over time, your body adapts and adjusts and this leads to number 3
3. Muscle imbalances
Some things start to get tighter to maintain posture and function and others get really really stretched out (think core!). That makes it harder for your body to work and things just get really thrown off. I know we like to blame everything on the baby, .... BUT another reality is imbalances were already there and pregnancy just brought it to the surface and exposed the truth. In pregnancy, it is harder to compensate so issues that were already there are harder to adjust for and cover up.

Now we can't change #1. Hormones are apart of the journey - welcome to pregnancy 🤰. BUT we can do something about posture and muscle imbalances. You can have a comfortable pregnancy!

I often hear things like “my friend had bad sciatic pain in pregnancy and told me to expect it”. Or “my mom also has prolapse so it runs in the family”. Or a very common one “My sister says she pees a little too, so I thought it was normal”. They often compare their experiences with the experience of their Mom, best friend, or sister and because others also struggle with similar things, they think that is the way it should be. Because society tends to normalize dysfunction, many women live for YEARS with very common, but treatable conditions and challenges.

My mission is to DISRPUT that way of thinking. Just because an experience is common doesn’t mean that it has to be the norm and accepted standard mom experience. The “why” of BBB is about education, empowerment, and advocacy. Spreading the message that pelvic floor issues are not a normal part of pregnancy or postpartum. Pain is not a rite of passage to motherhood. Bladder issues do not have to be your reward for bringing life into the world. And s*x should be comfortable and pleasurable even after having a baby.

Stay tuned for more!
