In 2022, I felt a lump in my right breast and was diagnosed with ER+ breast cancer. In January of 2023, I went through surgery, reconstruction, and radiation.
It’s hard to describe how difficult this period of my life felt. I was only 38 years old and had a five- and eight-year-old. It was difficult not having the energy to do the things I used to do as a mom during this time, and they weren’t old enough to truly understand. My husband, our families, extended family, friends, and coworkers were tremendously supportive, and Pink Ribbon Good ensured we didn’t have to cook for months. People came to walk with me and brought gifts to comfort me. While it was one of the hardest points of my life, I felt so much love and support.
I ran the Flying Pig in May of 2022, about ten months before my cancer diagnosis. How could I have cancer when I had just run a marathon? I am a healthy person. I run at least two marathons a year, eat well, and exercise regularly. This was one of the hardest things for me to understand.
I have been avoiding the Flying Pig for the past few years because it was a reminder of the time before cancer. This year, I signed up for the 2026 Flying Pig Half Marathon because it will remind me of how much I’m still capable of. Crossing the finish line means facing my fears and not letting cancer dictate how I live my life. It means gratitude to me as a survivor.
Let’s cheer Andrea on and support her as she takes this powerful step forward. 🐷🏃♀️💗
