Ever find yourself doing the "key-in-the-door" dance or rushing to the bathroom the second you get home?

It feels like your bladder is calling all the shots, but here’s the truth: Rushing to the bathroom when urgency is at its peak actually teaches your brain to panic.

Instead of sprinting, try the "Freeze & Breathe" technique:
-Pause and breathe: Calm your nervous system first.
-Quick contractions: Perform a couple of Kegels or heel raises to send a "calm down" signal to your bladder.
-Distract your brain - focus on something else

Walk, don't run: Only head to the bathroom once the urge has subsided.
You are in control of your bladder—not the other way around.

Do you struggle with that "gotta go" feeling every 20 minutes?
Pelvic floor therapy can help you regain your freedom from the bathroom.

How does a weak pelvic floor impact your daily life?

These muscles act like a hammock at the bottom of your pelvis, supporting your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. When they’re weak, you might notice:

👉 Urinary urgency or incontinence
👉 Difficulty reaching the toilet in time
👉 Trouble fully emptying bladder or bowel
👉 Pelvic pressure or heaviness
👉 Bowel leakage or flatulence
👉 Hip, low back, or SI joint pain

A weak pelvic floor can contribute to prolapse or make it feel worse.

The good news? Assessment partnered with a tailored home program from a pelvic floor physical therapist can help restore function, strength, and confidence.

One of the first things I teach my postpartum patients is that your posture matters more than you think.

During pregnancy, the uterus pushes the organs upward, causing the ribs to flare and the pelvis to rotate forward. After delivery, the body often stays in that “pregnancy posture,” even though the baby is gone.

Your body needs to learn how to gently bring the ribs and pelvis back into alignment so your core can learn how to function properly again.

Are you ready to learn how to get your body working for you instead of against you?

Leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh, jump, or stand up isn’t uncommon.

When it comes to the pelvic floor, leakage often happens for one of two reasons:
• The muscles are too slow to respond when pressure hits
• Or the muscles let go when they should be supporting

This is why doing Kegels doesn't always fix the problem.

Research shows that timing and coordination matter just as much as strength.
Your pelvic floor needs to learn to engage before the sneeze, not after.

Working with a pelvic floor therapist can help you learn how to do kegels the right way.

Are you ready to not be afraid of sneezing?

Asymmetries or tension in the lower spine, pelvis, or sacrum can affect how the colon sits in your pelvis and how easily stool passes.

Pelvic floor therapy can help by:
-reducing muscle tension
- correcting pelvic/sacral alignment
- strengthening supporting muscles to improve bowel function

A holistic approach that addresses the pelvic floor, abdomen, and low back is key to managing digestive and bowel concerns.

Does this sound like you? We can help. Book your appointment today: https://flourishpelvictherapy.janeapp.com/

Most of my male patients arrive unsure how to do a proper Kegel because they weren’t given clear direction.

Here what you should know:
- Exhale as you contract
- A true Kelel feels like a testicular + re**al lift
- Start doing them lying down, then progress to sitting, and finally to standing
- Aim for 20-25 contractions per day, morning and evening

Doing too many can cause tension and make symptoms worse.

If you're experiencing leakage or urgency, support is available.

“I’ve been doing Kegels for years and they don’t help.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common things I hear in my practice.

Here’s the thing: Kegels aren’t one-size-fits-all.

Some patients have pelvic floor tension so their muscles are already “stuck” in a tight, clenched state. More Kegels here can actually make symptoms worse.

Others have a true weakness and in that case, targeted strengthening can help.

If your Kegels aren’t working, it’s not your fault. It might just mean you need a tailored, guided approach to retrain your pelvic floor the right way.

Pelvic floor dysfunction isn't just about bladder contorl, it can afect digestion and bowel health, too.

Tight or weak pelvic floor muscles, poor neuromuscular coordination, or abdominal restrictions can contribute to:
- IBS or IBD symptoms
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Bloating, gas, or abdominal pain
- Difficulty fully emptying the bowel

A pelvic floor therapist can use breathing techniques, manual therapy and stretches to improve gut function and develop a plan that fits your body.

When a sudden urge hits, it’s tempting to rush to the bathroom. Did you know that’s actually the worst time?

Here's what I recommend instead:
-Pause & breathe
-Do a couple of quick kegels or heel raises. This quiets the bladder's "go now!" signal.
-Distract your mind and let the urge wave pass
-Only move to the bathroom when the urge is at a low point

This technique trains your nervous system, helps you regain control, and reduces the intensity of urgency over time.

Are you struggling with urgency? Save this post and message us to learn how pelvic floor therapy can help you.
