Health & Wellness - Walnut Hills

Health & Wellness - Walnut Hills A thriving community where residents lead healthier lives by engaging in nutrition education, active living programs and a neighborhood support network.

Walnut Hills deserves access to affordable, healthy food. By embracing good nutrition, active lifestyles and knowledge of personal health status, we support each other in living healthier, happier lives. COMMUNITY GARDENS
We are building a coalition of eco-friendly community gardens that generate fresh, nutritious produce. That produce will be used in both cooking demos and to reduce food insecurity in the area. Urban gardening classes will be held throughout the growing season. There will be opportunities to learn by doing in community gardens. ACTIVE LIVING
Vitality Yoga is training yogis in exchange for them volunteering to work in local gardens and greenspaces. The yogis teach weekly classes and once fully trained could start their own classes in the neighborhood. Regularly scheduled walking and biking events are in the planning stages. There will be rotating routes requiring various lengths of time and with different degrees of difficulty. HEALTH SCREENINGS
"Health Families Begin With Me" is a community-based comprehensive health and wellness intervention program that focuses on adult and childhood obesity. Programs include:

• Clinical assessment, diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of obesity for adolescents K-6th grade

• Community clinical screenings for hypertension, diabetes and BMI

• Community nutritional counseling for adults and children

• Community health promotion and disease prevention education

• Chronic disease management education through "Do You Know Your Numbers" educational program

• A community-based lifestyle improvement program for diabetes prevention for at-risk adults and those assessed/diagnosed as pre-diabetic

• Social health, grass-roots program to eradicate poverty and protect and beautify the environment through workforce development

I went for my morning walk today and discovered that my favorite sycamore tree atop the hill began blooming.
