Sometimes the bag of waters doesn’t break and babies are born en caul.
Old (Mid)wives tales will tell you that these babies are destined to be healers and midwives, that they are born with a veil of protection and can see between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Babies born en caul were said to be protected from drowning. Oftentimes the midwife would gift or sell pieces of the dried caul as an amulet or talisman to fishermen for protection at sea.
Google will say babies are born ‘en Caul at a rate of 1 in 80,000 but any Midwife will tell you it’s closer to 1 in 20.
