Dayton VA has 168 volunteers and tonight they were recognized for their contributions and dedication to Veterans. At the volunteer recognition dinner, they enjoyed a catered barbecue meal served to them by the Executive Leadership Team, plus music, photo booth, caricature drawings and a raffle with great prizes. Marshall Yeary was named the volunteer of the year.

Today the Dayton dozens honored unaccompanied U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Martin Vernello at his committal service. The Final Salute Society, the Dayton VA Honor Squad, Naval and Marine Corps Reserve members, his cousin, and countless Veterans and community members gathered to ensure his service was remembered. Corporal Vernello, you stood for our nation and today, our community stood for you. Semper Fi.

The VA Deputy Undersecretary of Health spent the afternoon at Dayton VA. Dr. Lee Payne met with the Executive Leadership Team, got a briefing about Dayton VA past and present and discussed the Electronic Health Record (EHR) which goes live June 6th. He also met with the Change Leadership Team, doctors, pharmacists and others involved in the implementation of the EHR. Dr. Payne also met our EHR mascot “Snaxs.”

Before the Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) system goes live at Dayton VA on June 6, 2026, there are some dates where online capabilities in My HealtheVet on VA.gov and the VA: Health and Benefits mobile app will be suspended so that data can be transferred to the new EHR.

Secure Messaging and VA Prescription Renewals Online:
Veterans can communicate through secure online messages on My HealtheVet on VA.gov and the VA: Health and Benefits mobile app until 11:59 p.m. ET on May 30th, with service resuming on June 8th. This includes sending secure messages to request prescription renewals.

VA Prescription Refills Online:
Veterans can request refills of their VA prescriptions on My HealtheVet on VA.gov and the VA: Health and Benefits mobile app until 11:59 p.m. ET on June 2nd, with service resuming on June 8th.
During this time, Veterans can still request prescription refills and renewals at an appointment, by mailing in a refill slip, or by calling the pharmacy at 937-268-6511 ext. 3027 and speaking to a representative.

Several events are taking place this week in recognition including a Resource Fair Thursday. Today, staff and medical center leadership passed out Freedom 250 lapel pins to Veterans as a token of thanks.

HAPPY 107TH BIRTHDAY!
Another trip around the sun for WWII Veteran John Dorsey. Today he celebrated his birthday at Dayton VA with a luncheon with family, friends, Dayton’s mayor, Dayton VA leadership and fellow Veterans in the Low Vision Clinic. Mr. Dorsey received a flag that had flown over the U.S.Capitol, a coin, and proclamations plus he sang a duet of Amazing Grace. He says he’s been blessed by the Lord and he appreciates all those who celebrated his birthday with him including 103-year-old Dorthea Morton and 101-year-old Lloyd Lynch who are also in the Low Vision Clinic.
