For the second time this week, Veterans were treated to Christmas carols. This evening,
Ro Nita Hawes-Saunders brought nearly 20 relatives and friends to the medical center to sing in the Emergency Department and on the 5th floor. Some Veterans started singing along with the carolers and suggested songs to sing. They were also given candy canes. The singers were happy to see the smiles on the Veterans’ faces. The caroling was meant to lift the Veterans’ spirits and to thank them for their service.

Santa and the Dayton Chapter of the Knights of Columbus visited Veterans in the hospital this evening. They talked with dozens of Veterans on the third, fourth, and fifth floors and gave each a gift plus a handmade card from elementary school children. The Veterans were very appreciative. The Knights have been doing this for years as a way to bring joy to Veterans in the hospital during the holidays.

Carolers stopped by our hospice unit today to sing Christmas songs to Veterans and give them a gift. The handful of singers from St. Timothy Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton went to different rooms and asked the Veterans what song they wanted to hear. Some Veterans sang along. One Veteran broke down in tears. Nurse Executive Dr. Becky Beckman joined in to sing and talk to Veterans. The carolers have been singing Christmas carols at the hospice unit for 10 years.

VFW Post 5436 of Troy brought holiday joy to Veterans in our Community Living Center today. They delivered gifts to each resident of Patton's Place with individualized cards, ornaments, blankets, socks, puzzle books and more. Nurse Executive Dr. Becky Beckman attended to offer our thanks and help distribute the gifts. Commander Kyle Kuta said the VFW motto is about serving Veterans in the community, and there's no better place to do that than the Dayton VA.
