Did you know that having diabetes can impact the health of your mouth, and vice versa? Today is Diabetes Alert Day, and here are a couple of ways that condition can impact your oral health.
#1. Having diabetes increases your risk for having periodontal disease (gum disease that negatively impacts the gums and bone that help to hold teeth in place). Coming to the dentist to get your gums and teeth evaluated/cleaned is a great way to help protect your dental health. It's also very important to keep your mouth cleaned daily via brushing and flossing.
#2. Diabetes can also cause dry mouth (leading to increased risk of tooth decay, etc.) as well as a condition known as thrush, which is a fungal infection that causes painful white patches in the mouth.
If you do not currently have a dentist, feel free to reach out to us for a new patient appointment. 423-775-9971

What you eat and what you drink has a big impact on the health of your teeth. In order to protect them, consider choosing healthy food and drink options to help protect your teeth. Foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables (ex. apples, celery, carrots, cucumbers, etc..) can actually help "clean" teeth while being eaten, as they are fibrous, crunchy, and can help stimulate saliva flow. Now that we've recently had a time change, let's talk about when to change your toothbrush! Did you know that it's recommended that you change your toothbrush head regularly at least every three-four months (or sooner, if you notice that bristles have frayed or you've been sick)? Over time and continued use, toothbrush bristles fray and wear out, which means your teeth don't get as clean. Whether it's an electric or manual brush, consider replacing your current brush head if it's been a while in order to get best results from your brushing.

Today is National False Teeth Day, which is a day to celebrate the options we have now to replace missing teeth. And just a reminder that Dr. Allport no longer does dentures, but we can refer you to offices that do.
For people who have lost teeth for various reasons, false teeth can provide help with chewing, speaking certain words, and aesthetics.
If you do have dentures, make sure to clean them daily with a gentle cleaner, such as dish soap, denture cleaner, etc., and if you use a brush, try to use one with soft bristles to avoid scratching it. To avoid breaking your dentures while cleaning them, it is a good idea to have something in your sink, such as a hand towel or water, to catch the denture if it falls. Another way to protect your child's teeth is to avoid giving them bottles at bedtime. Fruit juices, sodas and even milk contain sugar, and extended exposure of these drinks puts your child's teeth at risk for developing cavities at an early age.
