Today, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a 2.8% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for all Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries.

This increase will benefit approximately 71 million Social Security recipients beginning in January 2026, and nearly 7.5 million SSI recipients starting December 31, 2025.

Commissioner Frank Bisignano stated, “Social Security is a promise kept, and the annual cost-of-living adjustment is one way we are working to make sure benefits reflect today’s economic realities and continue to provide a foundation of security. The cost-of-living adjustment is a vital part of how Social Security delivers on its mission.”

Starting in early December, beneficiaries will receive mailed notifications detailing their updated benefit amounts. The COLA notice was redesigned in 2024 to be more user-friendly, condensed to a single page with clear, personalized language. It will include specific dates, dollar amounts and any applicable deductions to help recipients easily understand their new benefits.

If you're over 62 and facing a disabling condition, you may be wondering whether to apply for SSER or SSDI. SSDI provides disability benefits to eligible workers, while SSER is the earnings record used to determine those benefits.

In our latest blog, we followed the real-life journey of Jane, who faced this exact decision, and discovered how choosing SSDI helped protect her long-term financial and healthcare future.

When it comes to Social Security benefits, two acronyms often cause confusion: SSER and SSDI. Let’s break them down:

SSDI: Social Security Disability Insurance

Who qualifies: Individuals who have worked and paid into Social Security through payroll taxes.

SSER: Social Security Early Retirement
Who qualifies: Workers who have earned enough credits to retire can elect to retire early starting at the age of 62.
