Doula Talk…
The infamous Cl****is or CLIT…what is it good for???
Did you know???
“The role of the cl****is in birth is absolutely crucial… It’s a switch. On the inside. The baby switches a switch and our anatomy changes to give him a lovely cushion for his head on the way out.”
Margaret Jowitt, ep. 26 - “The Role of the Cl****is in Labour”
Have you ever heard about the incredibly important role the cl****is plays in birth? No? So keep reading!!
As the baby moves through the birth canal, the baby’s head pushes on the “button” - the internal structure of the cl****is.
This activates a few different very important, simultaneous physiologic processes.
The strong pressure on the internal structure of the cl****is and specialized bundle of cl****al nerves sends a signal to the brain to release lots and lots of oxytocin.
This oxytocin causes strong contractions which trigger FER (the fetal ejection reflex) as well as widening the pelvis and moving the sacrum out of the way. This helps the baby to be born quickly, safely, and efficiently.
The pressure on the internal structure of the cl****is also causes the clitorial wings (crura) and vestibular bulbs which wrap around the birth canal to become engorged with blood, creating a nice little soft pillow to cushion the baby’s head as they are being born.
In addition, the pressure on the internal structure of the cl****is cause the blood vessels surrounding the va**na to fill with blood and allow the va**nal rugae (tiny pleats or ridges in the va**nal walls) to expand like an accordion.
This creates ample space for the baby to move through the birth canal, as well as releasing natural fluids into the va**na which helps the baby slide right out.
This huge oxytocin burst during birth and in the one hour after (10x above normal!) also activates our systems of bonding and attachment, as well as playing an important role in breastfeeding and other physiologic processes.
