October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month with the aim of highlighting the importance of ultrasound technology.

At The Lennon Center, we are blessed to be able to provide free limited ultrasounds to women who are between 6 and 21 weeks pregnant through the generousity of our donors.

Statistics from Care Net indicate that, "when women who are still in the process of making a pregnancy decision are offered the option to view their baby’s ultrasound image in a supportive pregnancy center environment, they are much more likely to continue their pregnancy."

This is what our nurse manager, ultrasound technician, and our staff work for everyday and what our mission is at The Lennon Center.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School in Dearborn is holding a diaper and wipes drive for The Lennon Center until the end of the month and the Amazon deliveries are overwhelming our office! We are grateful to those of you who were able to help us out with a package of diapers and wipes.

At this time of the year, our parenting class client load is increasing and our diaper reserves in the larger sizes are nearing empty. As quickly as the diapers come in the door, they go right back out.

If you are able to help us out with a purchase of diapers and wipes, it's as easy as click and ship right to our door from our Walmart registry. Thank you so much in advance for your help! https://www.walmart.com/registry/BR/065e9dae-4dcc-423e-a36c-641b4143b261

The Father Clement H. Kern Foundation recently awarded The Lennon Center a grant for the purchase of baby items to assist our parenting class clients.

The Kern Foundation has assisted us with grant awards since 2021 and we are grateful for their generosity in helping us purchase items that our clients greatly need such as diapers and wipes.

As the second photo of Fr. Kern says, Clement Kern showed Detroit how to live in joyful service to others.

Fr. Kern truly lived a life of service not only as pastor of Most Holy Trinity ministering to the spiritual needs of the Corktown community, but he also ministered to the daily needs of residents by opening up soup kitchens, thrift stores, founding the Cabrini Health center, legal clinics and helping the homeless secure shelter.

He visited prisoners to console, support and advocate for them. He was known as a labor priest and a strong union supporter building personal and professional friendships with key leaders.

Fr. Kern passed away in 1983, but his legacy lives on and for that we are so grateful. Thank you Fr. Kern Foundation.

Did you know that a newborn will have about 300 bones but some of these will fuse together as the child grows as an adult has a total of 206 bones?

The fetal stage of development is the last stage of development but is the longest, which is from 9 to 40 weeks.

During this time, we see amazing change and growth in the fetus. The fetal heartbeat grows stronger. Fingers, hair, and eyelashes form. The lungs are the last organ to finish development and this occurs around 36-38 weeks.

The brain does not stop growing until a person is about 25 years of age! A newborn will have about 300 bones but some of these will fuse together as the child grows as an adult has 206 bones.

All of these amazing facts are part of baby's development in the womb. Life is truly a gift and needs to be cherished!

Because of your donations, our clients received 309 packages of diapers and wipes during the month of September! That's over $5,200 in diapers and wipes that were freely given! Wow! Thank you.

In September, our parenting class clients received a total 223 material resource assistance boxes full of clothing and baby essentials such as bottles, pacifiers, nursing supplies, blankets, bibs, burp clothes, washcloths and towels, bouncy seats, swings, strollers, and other essential care items to help them provide for their children. That's amazing love being passed onto our clients and their children!

At The Lennon Center, we help families with their children up to age five through our parenting class programs.

We are all about walking with moms to empower families to be able to support their children and be good parents. Empower. Support. Parent. It's what we love to do!

You can help us in meeting the greatest needs, which are currently diapers and wipes, by helping to purchase size 5 & 6 diapers and wipes on our Walmart registry or pick up a box and drop them off at the center during business our business hours of 9-3p on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. https://www.walmart.com/registry/BR/065e9dae-4dcc-423e-a36c-641b4143b261

This week is Read Aloud to a Child Week which encourages adults across the country to pick up a book and read aloud to a child in their life.

This week marks a national movement to raise awareness of the literacy crisis among under-resourced communities in the United States, as well as the immense value of providing books and reading aloud to improve literacy rates and empower children.

In 2012, a program called Read to a Child began operating in Detroit to address the growing concerns regarding 3rd grade literacy in Metro Detroit elementary schools.

The region has grown to support four schools in Detroit and Pontiac, delivering thousands of one on one weekly Read Aloud Mentoring Sessions since its inception.

3rd grade reading competency is still an area of huge concern for Michigan children, particularly in under-resourced communities.

In speaking about their partnership with Read to a Child, Detroit Leadership Academy school Principal, Erin Wills had this to say about the Read Aloud Mentoring Program: “Read to a Child is one of the only organizations who focus on continuing relationships with students over a number of years. Not only does Read to a Child foster a love of reading, but research indicates that the number one interrupter in cycles of trauma is the consistent presence of a caring adult.”
