Meet Mary Catherine Betts, our Resident of the Month for August! She was born in Detroit on April 8, 1929. She grew up going to All Saints school in Detroit and then moved to Saint Gabriel. In high school, she worked at Woolworth's. For many years, Mary would "take the green bus, get off and go to work at Detroit Transmission. I loved it, and they loved me!" she said. She would do office work, keeping the records accurate and organized. She also worked at the Detroit Convention Bureau.
Mary married the love of her life, Robert Betts. "He was in the neighborhood," she recalls. They wed, on February 3, 1951, and had 7 kids together and were married for almost 70 years! Robert sadly passed away 1 day before their 70th anniversary in 2021. Their union created 17 grandchildren and 18 (and counting!) great-grandchildren. Mary's daughters are Linda, Donna, Margaret, and Rose and Mary's sons are Jim, Greg, and Robert.
In her free time, Mary loved to crochet, knit, and play the piano! She is an avid sports fan, keeping up with the Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons. She also likes to do puzzles. Mary was involved in a craft club once a month and looked forward to her bunco club.
Reflecting on her life, Mary says, "I got along with everyone. I love my family. My daughter married the boy down the street. I don't know... I just carried on. My big deal was Detroit Transmission." Her daughter Linda recalls her mom as a fun person who has always been there for all her children, four of which are legally blind and don't drive. Despite everything, "we do alright." Congratulations to Mary Betts on being our Resident of the Month! ❤️ 😊
