We do ask if you are attending one of our upcoming classes and have been around any horses in question for EHV, please reschedule for the safety of our horses.
If you are signed up for an upcoming class, please keep an eye on this page for updates.

You’ve likely heard about the Equine Herpes Myeloencephalitis cases that have been linked to the BFR in Oklahoma and the WPRA in Texas. There is a lot of information being passed around, not all of which is accurate, but we understand any of it can incite concern in any horse owner. We have been in contact with the Indiana State Veterinarian’s office and will keep you updated with information and recommendations if and when they change.
• Participant lists from both shows are in the process of being sent to state veterinarians, so they can be contacted to be made aware of the situation.
• If your horse attended either of these shows, it is recommended that you self-quarantine your horse(s) for 14 (minimum) to 21 (extra cautious) days.
• The only horses of concern at this point are horses with possible primary contact with affected horses. If you do not have horses coming back to your barn from either of these shows, your level of concern should be the same as it was last week 😊
Other things to keep in mind:
• Conley & Koontz has strict biosecurity measures in place to keep all of our in hospital patients as safe as possible, including both hospitalized and day patients. We also follow standard biosecurity measures to limit spread of disease from farm to farm during the course of our ambulatory calls.
• We do ask that if you or others are returning from one of these shows, you let us know if you are scheduling any routine or emergency appointments.
• EHM is caused by a mutation of the virus that causes respiratory illness – which is included in our vaccination protocols. Horses that travel or live in a boarding facility or other dynamic herd should be vaccinated 3 times annually for EHV-1.
We understand this is a nerve-wracking situation. Thank you for trusting us to help you keep your horses safe and healthy. If you have any questions about this outbreak specifically, please contact us on Facebook or by email at info@ckequinehospital.com. As always, emergency concerns should be called into the office at 877-499-9909.
