Staying Home for Spring Break? 🏡 Below are a few themes you could use to plan some extra fun moments during your stay-cation!

Take a Trip: visit a local park, hiking trail, science/exploration center, museum, arcade, bakery or coffee shop, nail salon, and more! 🛝🛶

Movie Night: pick a movie, have a snack themed dinner or pizza, pop some popcorn, build a viewing fort, and snuggle up! 🎬🎟

Backyard BBQ: fire up the grill or have a campfire and roast marshmallows or hot dogs! Add some lemonade and dessert to make it feel extra special. 🏕

Pajama Day: stay in your PJs all day! Watch movies, eat snacks, read books, drink hot cocoa and relax! 🥞

Spring Cleaning: make a list of 5 cleaning projects you want to tackle. Give your child a few jobs and let them choose which they would like to do. Let them use appropriate/safe cleaning materials, declutter a space in their room, or organize their toys.

Staying Home for Spring Break? 🏡 Here are a few low prep activities that will keep your kiddos busy and engaged during their stay-cation!

✅Sensory Bins: Grab a bin, add some dried beans 🫘 or rice, toss in some items to find (different sizes, shapes, colors, or themed items), and a few tools for scooping or sorting.

✅Kraft Paper Roll: Roll it out onto the floor with a variety of coloring/writing utensils and stickers 🖍️🖌️✏️ Tape it to the wall and offer crayons or pencils for vertical surface writing/drawing *avoid markers so they don’t bleed through*

✅Water Play: Use a water table, tub of water, or even a play sink. Add some bubbles, sponges, and different sized cups. Take it outside if you have warm weather, or inside on towels if it is too cold 💦

✅Play Doh: Use a themed Play Doh set or just some cookie cutters, Play Doh scissors, and your imagination!

✅Board or Card Games: Age-appropriate games are a fantastic way to encourage kids to play together or to have fun with you! 🃏

Day 4: Clovers & Gold 🍀💛
Make 4 leaf clovers out of anything green… we used cucumbers here 🥒

Then add a “gold” dip. This could be my fruit dip from the “fruit rainbow” post. Hummus is pictured here! Store bought or homemade work equally well!

Homemade hummus:
1 can of garbanzo beans, ¾ of the water drained.
Scoop of tahini (sesame butter), if desired.
Splash of olive oil.
Seasonings of choice… garlic, onion, dill, chipotle, etc.

Blend in a blender or food processor until smooth.

Last day of snack tips 🥨🍪
✅Try something out of the ordinary at snack time! This may be cookie cutter shapes, having a picnic with some books📗📗 or inviting a friend or neighbor for snack time.

✅ When we involve children in meal preparation, they get to explore the foods and they feel excitement and power over their creation, thus making them more likely to eat it.

But, in reality, this can be challenging to implement, especially when dinnertime can be one of the craziest times of the day in most people’s homes.

Instead, let them help prepare a mid-day snack. Get out some foods they can cut with their cookie cutter or child-safe knife set, such as this one: https://amzn.to/4clHhea this is a favorite in our home!!!

If it is nice outside, take your snack, a comfy blanket, and some favorite books 📗📗 outside. The new environment may be distracting, but it may also be a fun way to enjoy new foods. It will create a lasting memory, if nothing else. Not warm enough? Have an indoor picnic!!

Invite friends and family for snack time. Make it like a tea party 🫖 and allow your child to be the host.

Day 3: Green Smoothies!🍀🥤
Smoothies are probably one of the easiest ways to get a lot of nutrition packed into the day!

To make a perfect smoothie:
✅Liquid of choice… water, milk, coconut water, 100% juice
✅Frozen fruit… I used light colored fruit for this one to allow the green to come through. Bananas, pineapple, peaches.
✅A handful of fresh or frozen greens.
✅Protein… a scoop of yogurt or peanut butter.
✅Extras based on your child’s needs… nut/seed powder, fruit/veggie powder, high fat oil, etc.

More Snack Tips 🥨🍿
Batch prep snacks and freeze them when possible to cut down on the workload or decision fatigue each day. Because your child is likely going to need 2-4 snacks throughout the day, and I am encouraging you to offer whole foods in a “mini meal” style, there is going to be some meal prep needed … sounds like a lot of work 🤦‍♀️

Just like everything else, think “an ounce of prevention”.
The more whole food your child eats in the early years, the more whole food they will want to eat later.
And the reverse is also true - the more processed food they eat in the early years, the more they will want to eat later.

Plan out a few snacks that can be made in large quantities each week:
🍓🥦🥕🧀Cut lots of fruit, veggies, or cheese
🥣Make a large batch of dip
🥚Hard boil a dozen eggs
🍫Or prep a double batch of bars and freeze the extra. Then, you will have all your snacks ready to go each day. Plus, when you freeze extras, your future self will thank you during those busy times!

Smoothies are a great way to do this!!! Make “smoothie bags” with all the ingredients needed to blend into a smoothie and freeze them. Pull them out and add your liquid when you’re ready to make them! Another idea… smoothie Popsicle. Double your smoothie batch and freeze the extra into Popsicle molds for a quick snack.

Day 2 🍀🍀 St. Patty's Day Snacks
Green Dip

🥑Mash an avocado, add some lemon juice 🍋 and salt.

Pair preferred and new foods with the dip. Notice there are chips and rice cakes here… a definite preferred food in my house. But also some veggies… cucumbers are a preferred food and peppers are a sometimes food.

More tips on snacks:
✔️Offer both preferred and non-preferred foods at snack time. If you want your child to eat, you must offer them foods they already eat at each meal and snack!!!! Let's look at that again .... we must include preferred foods at each meal and snack.

Yes, we want kids to eat new and different foods, but they likely will not do that when they are staring at a plate of ALL new and different foods.

That is overwhelming. Like, lost in a foreign country without any knowledge of the language and no money overwhelming. 😲

Give them foods they know AND foods they are learning about so they can eat and explore new foods at the same time.

✔️We. Love. Dips. If the dip is the preferred food, try offering some new foods to dip into it. This way, we are taking something safe and familiar… the dip… and exposing them to new foods through it.

Or, maybe the dip is the new food. If so, offer preferred things to dip into it to allow them to explore the new food.

When we expose them to new foods and allow them to explore them, we are helping them expand their diets. This “expose, explore, expand” idea is borrowed from Melanie Potock at My Munch Bug: https://mymunchbug.com/2017/07/track-food-exposures/

Snack Time!!! 🍿🍪

This week, we will be highlighting some St. Patty’s Day 🍀🍀🍀Themed Snacks

First up, Fruit Rainbow!! 🌈
🍓🍇🍊Cut several different colored fruits and shape them into a rainbow.

Add a dip for a different texture and to add some protein.
Pictured here is my go-to dip: Plain yogurt, peanut butter, honey, and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

🍿🍪Snacks… the bane of most parents’ existence. How many times a day does your child ask for a snack?!

A few tips on snacks:

☑️Offer snacks on a regular schedule to allow your child to anticipate when the next time to eat is coming. If there is a predictable eating schedule, it will cut down on the number of times they ask for a snack.

It also gives you the opportunity to say things like “yes, we will be having a snack in 15 minutes” or “we just had a snack, it will be lunch time after we ___”.

☑️Treat their snacks like “mini meals” rather than “snacks”.

When we think “snack” we tend to think quick, processed food. Hence why your child keeps asking for a snack… the calories are empty and not filling, plus the processed food tends to be more heavily desired because of its palatability.

If we shift our thinking to “mini meal” we tend to serve more whole foods and a balance of protein, fruits, veggies, and carbs, which help your child feel more full for a longer time.

More tips to come each day this week 🙂
